Blair to squirm at Iraq inquiry - Mirror.co.uk

WAR criminal (unindicted) Tony Blair deservedly faces a bumpy ride when recalled to the Iraq inquiry on Friday.

Legal eagle Peter Goldsmith dropped his old boss in it by revealing the warrior Premier contradicted private advice about the lawfulness of the invasion.

No doubt Blair will sound like a stuck record, justifying his illegal war.

Eight years on I acknowledge he's no more likely to change his mind than critics like me of the 2003 madness.

What I hate are the muttered apologies of those who claim to have been conned – or pretend they were always against it yet backed it at the time.

The case against war was clear eight years ago, which is why 139 Labour, 53 Lib Dems and 16 Tories were among the MPs voting against.

It's why record numbers of ordinary people marched in London, Glasgow and Belfast.

And why UN weapons inspector Hans Blix and countries such as France and Germany didn't join Blair's great misadventure.

I'll enjoy watching his discomfort but it won't bring back 179 squaddies or the 100,000-plus Iraqis who died.
