A Swedish author has reached an agreement with the estate of The Catcher in the Rye author J.D. Salinger that will ban the unauthorized sequel to the beloved novel from being published or sold in Canada or the U.S.

Fredrick Colting, who wrote the book 60 Years Later under the pseudonym John David California, will be permitted to release the book outside North America.

Publishers Weekly is reporting Colting has reached a settlement with the Salinger estate agreeing not to sell his sequel in Canada or the U.S. until the copyright has expired on The Catcher in the Rye.

Before his death in January 2010, Salinger filed suit against Colting trying to prevent publication of 60 Years Later.

The settlement allows Colting, himself a publisher, to release his book internationally. Swedish and English editions of 60 Years Later were published in the U.K. and Sweden two years ago, and publishers in other countries have expressed interest in the book.

The book follows a 76-year-old character called Mr. C as he has a series of adventures in New York city while on the run from his nursing home.

Colting called the book a "parody" of 1951's The Catcher in the Rye, which has sold 35 million copies. Salinger's lawyers condemned the book as "a rip-off, pure and simple" and a U.S. judge agreed.

Under the settlement, Colting may not use the ban as a means of promoting his book, nor may he dedicate it to Salinger or mention The Catcher in the Rye. The Swedish writer said he is "pleased" with the decision to allow international publication.

Salinger had always resisted film or TV adaptations of his book as well as any "sequels."
