A gay couple have won their discrimination suit against the owners of a small British seaside hotel who refused to rent them a room, the Bristol Evening Post reports.

Civil partners Martyn Hall and Steve Preddy had sued the owners of the Chymorvah Private Hotel in Cornwall on the grounds they were not allowed to share a double room because they were a gay couple, the newspaper reports.

The court awarded the couple the equivalent of $2,800 each.

Peter and Hazel Bull, the devout Christians who own the hotel, said it was not about sexual orientation rather their opposition to sex before marriage.

They had argued that the restriction also applied to heterosexual couples who are not married, the newspaper reports.
