iPhone 5 Could Get Dual-Core GPU - infoSync World

AppleInsider reports that a source of the trustworthy kind has explained why the recently released iOS 4.3 beta has references to the PowerVR SGX543 GPU, and how it could impact the new iPhone 5 and iPad 2. The new Apple A5 chip to run in the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 is said to use an integrated SGX543 graphics and video core. The new graphics core also supports OpenCL, used to offload general purpose computing tasks on the GPU for fast execution.

A source familiar with Apple's graphics strategy says the company will use the PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU specifically, which pairs two SGX543 cores to work as one. It's worth noting that the Apple A5 chip will require high memory bandwidth in order to make a more powerful GPU useful.

As we all know, high-end memory solutions aren't cheap. Apple bets big with the Apple A5 chip though, which will be included in at least three products this year already: the iPhone 5, iPad 2 and next-generation Apple TV. We imagine the Apple A5 chip may possibly also take advantage of the new DDR3 memory capability for ARM-based chips to get things moving fast enough (we'll probably never know).

With rumors of the iPad 2 getting a QXGA resolution, we guess Apple fans can barely wait to see whether especially the iPad 2 will be able to deliver the goods. Apple isn't known to take the easy path when it comes to building stuff, but they somehow manage to always land on their feet anyway.

Regardless, both the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 will have just as high - if not higher - expectations for "OS and Services" this year. The iPad 2 is rumored to be officially announced soon, with an expected release in April. The iPhone 5 is expected to be released in June, either with or without support for Verizon Wireless' network.
