Mr Tabak, who lives in the same block of flats in Bristol, is thought to have been arrested in the early hours of this morning.

The Dutch architect is registered as living in the Canynge Road apartment in Clifton with his girlfriend.

Police will not confirm or deny the name of the suspect, who is being held at an undisclosed location.

Calls to his employer in Bath were referred to Avon and Somerset Police.

The arrest is believed to have taken place at a converted Victorian terraced house in Aberdeen Road, Clifton.

Police have sealed off the rear of Joanna's flat and both ends of Canynge Road as officers in white forensic outfits carry out searches.

The latest development comes five weeks after the 25-year-old landscape architect disappeared.

The arrest is the second to be made by detectives since her frozen body was found dumped in a lane on the outskirts of Bristol on Christmas Day.

Joanna's landlord Chris Jefferies, 65, was arrested on December 30 and questioned for three days on suspicion of murder before being released on bail.

Her father David Yeates, 63, has said he is "pleased" the investigation is "moving forward".

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Jones, who is leading the inquiry, thanked Joanna's family and boyfriend for their support.

He said: "I would like to thank the public for their continued support for the investigation and the information they have provided to us.

"I would also like to pay tribute to Jo's family and to (Joanna's boyfriend) Greg, who continue to be unfailing in their support to me and my team at what is an incredibly difficult and painful time for them."

Police have received more than 300 phone calls and emails since Joanna's parents David and Teresa launched a public appeal for information earlier this week.

A reconstruction of their daughter's final journey has been filmed in Bristol and it is expected to be aired on Crimewatch next week.

Joanna disappeared on Friday, December 17, after going for drinks with colleagues from her architectural firm.

She was reported missing by her boyfriend Greg Reardon, 27, two days later.

Her body was discovered by a couple walking their dogs in Failand, North Somerset, on Christmas Day. She had been strangled.
