It didn't take long once the Countdown to 10 Billion Apps contest was announced to reach that incredible milestone. Apple announced today that gliding into the limelight and the winner of the $10,000 iTunes Gift Card was Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent in the United Kingdom.

For those who are curious, the lucky app, that wins nothing but being recognized, is a novelty application called Paper Glider (free), by Neon Play where the object is to see how far you can flick and fly your virtual paper airplane.

For those who have the original app, the latest version has an added level of difficulty and supports multi-tasking so an incoming call or text message won't mess up your high score.

Paper Glider is now just one of over 350,000 apps in the App Store and interestingly enough of the 10 billion apps downloaded in 2 ½ years, 70% were downloaded in the last year alone showing the incredible growth in this method of distribution.

It should be interesting to see whether the newly released Mac App Store model will follow in these same footsteps.
