The Prince and Princess of Wales moved into a double apartment at Kensington Palace a year after they married in 1981 and Diana continued to live there following their separation in 1992 and their divorce four years later.
The palace has been described as a "children's paradise", with its long passageways and numerous outdoor gardens, including one on the roof where the family spent many hours.
Overlooking Kensington Gardens, it is home to several members of the Royal family, including Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
The palace is currently undergoing a £12 million refurbishment which is due to be completed in time for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June 2012.
Last year, correspondence between Buckingham Palace and the Government, released under the Freedom of Information Act, showed that officials feared the public reaction after it was decided in 2005 to let out apartments 8 and 9, which had lain empty since Diana's death in 1997.
Apartment 8 was eventually rented out to four of Prince Charles's charities, after a £500,000 refurbishment in 2007-8, while No 9 was rented out to the head of the Army.
William and Kate will spend most of the first two years of their marriage, at least, in a cottage in north Wales, where the Prince works as a search and rescue helicopter pilot at RAF Valley in Anglesey.
