The Department for Transport has "no plans" to allow the self-balancing machines onto roads despite a public consultation finding that most people are in favour of the move.
Segway devotees say they should be treated just like bicycles, and argue they are in many ways safer because they are ridden while standing up and so users are more visible to car drivers.
At the moment, the best hope for Segways in Britain would be if Mr Coates appealed his conviction and had the ruling was overturned.
