I say apparently because, well, I'm at work at the moment, writing this blog post from the delightful confines of our portable building village out by Christchurch's airport, so can't check whether the network is back up and running.
Twitter tells me that it is: so too does a story on Stuff, which says that Sony is doing a rollout restoration of the service, which has been offline for almost a month after a severe hacking attack that accessed personal information on 77 million PlayStation Network and Qriocity accounts, 90 per cent of which are in North America and Europe, and may have stolen credit card information.
Sony hopes to have the service completely operational by May 31 and in a video statement on the Sony blog the company's Kaz Hirai said, "I can't thank you enough for your patience and support during this time. We are taking aggressive action at all levels to address the concerns that were raised by this incident, and are making consumer data protection a fulltime, companywide commitment."
I'll check tonight when I get home but I understand there's a mandatory firmware update that has to be applied and users are prompted to change their PSN account password.
So, no doubt there are thousands of PS3 users wanting to get back online and start fragging their mates, as well as complete the co-op portion of Portal 2 - both of which needed the PSN working for them to do that.

I tried it today around midday after getting the update yesterday and it still isn't working for me. I'm hoping to start playing some online Mortal Kombat once I can. Although if it has the lag I imagine it probably will then I'll probably quit preety quickly.
PSN was working this morning, i played black ops. but now its offline again.
I am gunna play Socom 4 as soon as its good again, who knows when that will be though.
Its overloaded at the moment i think. So most people cant get on. If your on Facebook go to the 'Playstation NZ' page, people are updating on there
