A 28-year-old Special Forces soldier from Washington died Friday at an Army hospital in Afghanistan from injuries he suffered in an attack earlier in the day, the U.S. Department of Defense said in a Sunday news release.
Staff Sgt. Wyatt A. Goldsmith of Colville, Stevens County, was injured when insurgents attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenades in Afghanistan's Helmand province, the department's release says. He later died at Camp Bastion Hospital.
Goldsmith was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McCord.
