Mother-of-four Michelle Barrett from Leixlip, Co Kildare auditions in Cardiff with a rendition of Whitney Houston's All The Man I Need.
She tells the judges she "never gave up" on her dream of a singing career despite the pressures of family life.
A tearful Contostavlos tells Barrett that her performance reminds her of her own mother.
She says: "Me and my mum have got this really powerful relationship - she's the reason that I sing.
"She had the most powerful voice and never did anything with it - you know, she had me, she became unwell and then, you know, she spent her life still singing in the kitchen, and I wish she'd got up and done that because she has a voice just like that. Amazing. I can't believe I just got that emotional."
Fellow judge Kelly Rowland praises the "raspy-ness" of Barrett's voice, while Louis Walsh says of her performance: "It was certainly good enough for me."
You can watch Barrett's performance at 8pm on ITV and TV3 tonight, Saturday September 17.
