India v England: fighting victory gives captain Alastair Cook good reason for ... - Telegraph.co.uk

That 2011 series and England's record of not having won here since 2006 has been mentioned much, and Cook was glad that that horrible run had ended.

"It is pretty much the same squad we had out here last time when we lost 5-0 so to get an early win proves to themselves that they can play in these conditions," he said.

"We know it is hard, but the way we fought was impressive and we'll have to do that again in the next game. It was important to get a win early doors for the main reason that it gives the lads a bit of confidence."

Cook, though, still thinks that his side are underdogs in this five-match series, which moves to Kochi on Tuesday for the next match. "

"I do still think we're clear underdogs," he said, "because of the fact these are their home conditions and India are so strong here. We're going to have to refresh well and keep delivering our skills."

Cook reserved special praise for his two spinners, man-of-the-match James Tredwell and Joe Root.

"That little bowling partnership between Tredders and Joe Root really took the sting out of their batting," he said. "We know what Tredders does and for him to come on and bowl like that and get four wickets on there was fantastic.

"Joe too just came on and held his nerve. We picked him as a batsman, but clearly it's a big bonus that he can bowl more than useful off-spinners in one-day games."

India captain MS Dhoni took some of the blame for his side's failed chase, finishing just nine runs short on 316 for nine. "Frankly we should have got that – it was a very fast outfield," he said. "It was quite easy if me and Raina had stayed."
