Kitschy Television Batmobile Fetches $4.6 Million in Arizona Auction - Wall Street Journal (blog)

The Batmobile from the 1960s "Batman" television series sold for $4.6 million at this weekend's Barrett-Jackson collector-car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. The car, known by fans as "the 1966 Batmobile," was built by famous car customizer George Barris for the program.

The often-copied car was based on a 1955 concept vehicle called the Lincoln Futura that Barris bought for $1. In earlier comic books Batman had other cars, and the character has driven a number of ever more impressive Batmobiles in a string of movies that began in 1989. But none of those vehicles has developed the devoted following of the television version.

Barrett-Jackson, a well-known specialist in collectible cars, said in November that it planned to sell the famous black car, which was on sale for the first time since Barris acquired it. The company said the car comes with a collection of memorabilia and documentation from Barris' personal archive.
