A typical day in a simulated mission to Mars - Telegraph.co.uk

"Mission control" has also tried to spice things up by simulating prolonged power, equipment and communications cuts to see how they coped in emergency situations. When available, email and voice communication with mission control was delayed by up to 20 minutes as it would be in deep space. For leisure, the men read books, learnt foreign languages, watched DVDs, played video games and were occasionally allowed to watch delayed news bulletins.

They also had access to an onboard greenhouse where they grew tomatoes, peas and onions, something the psychologists working with them said helped calm their nerves. Emails from loved ones were eagerly anticipated and formed a major element in the men's lives throughout the experiment. Just like real-life astronauts the men were also allowed to celebrate Christmas, New Year, and even Halloween.
