Q3 growth doesn't dispel UK recession fears - euronews

It was up 0.5 percent from the previous three months with business services and finance posting increases.

However economists see most of the growth as a rebound from a weak second quarter and a survey of purchasing managers (PMI) showed a sharp fall in manufacturing activity in October.

Factory output declined by its sharpest monthly rate since June 2009 when Britain was still in recession.

The first is a variation on the "optical tweezers" method, where two crossed lasers use their heat to tow a sample in. It depends on a planet having an atmosphere and so may not be suitable for more distant explorations.

A second uses solenoid beams, intense lasers that create an electromagnetic effect to drag in an object. Unlike the optical tweezers, he solenoid beams work in a space vacuum.

The final technique has never been demonstrated in a lab but is based on a Bessel beam, a laser that creates ripples – like a stone thrown in a pond – which could coax a sample in.

"We're at the starting gate on this," said laser scientist Barry Coyle. "This is a new application that no one has claimed yet."

A BOEING 767 with 220 passengers on board made an emergency landing on its belly at Warsaw international airport after its landing gear failed.

Fire and ambulance crews were deployed and all passengers and crew travelling on the plane belonging to national flag carrier LOT Polish Airlines were able to disembark safely overnight.

"The Boeing 767-300 with 220 passengers aboard travelling from Newark made a successful emergency landing after its landing gear failed to deploy," LOT spokesman Leszek Chorzewski said.

"The plane landed safely on its belly on the runway, which had been sprayed with special flame retardant substances. All the passengers disembarked, no-one was injured," Mr Chorzewski said.

Warsaw airport temporarily suspended all flights.

Pete Townshend slams iTunes - CANOE

The Who star Pete Townshend has taken aim at the online music culture, accusing Apple's iTunes website of "bleeding" artists like a "digital vampire".

The guitarist gave a lecture on the modern music industry at Britain's Radio Festival in Salford, northern England on Monday, and he took aim at the digital retail giant, insisting iTunes bosses should do more to help artists, rather than just taking the money.

The rocker claims the company should offer editorial guidance and "creative nurture" to acts who use the service, telling the audience, "Is there really any good reason why, just because iTunes exists in the wild west internet land of Facebook and Twitter, it can't provide some aspect of these services to the artists whose work it bleeds like a digital vampire... for its enormous commission?"

Townshend also spoke out against illegal file-sharing, insisting internet users who take advantage of free songs are guilty of "destroying copyright" and theft.

He adds, "The word 'sharing' surely means giving away something you have earned, or made, or paid for?... (They) may as well come and steal my son's bike while they're at it... (If someone) pretends that something I have created should be available to them free... I wonder what has gone wrong with human morality and social justice."
