LONDON —U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron's government clashed with the opposition Labour party over economic policy Friday as it sought to face down criticism that ministers had no plan to propel the recovery.

Labour leader Ed Miliband accused the government of dashing the "British promise" that future generations will enjoy increased opportunities, saying current policies were "kicking away the ladders" of advancement for lower-income Britons.
