Update at 11:16 a.m. ET: Reuters quotes a spokesman for Chavez as saying that the Libyan government has accepted a plan by Venezuela to seek a negotiated solution to the conflict. The news agency also quotes Information Minister Andres Izarra as saying the Arab League had shown interest in the Chavez plan for mediation talks.

Earlier posting: Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has accepted an offer from Venezuela to mediate in Libya's political crisis, Al-Jazeera TV reports.

Al-Jazeera says details of the plan, which would involve a commission from Latin America, Europe and the Middle East and talks between Gadhafi and opposition forces, could be announced by the Arab League in Cairo as early as today.

It says the deal was struck in a conversation between Gadhafi and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who have long been close political allies.

The network quotes sources in Caracas as saying that Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro has discussed the offer with Amr Moussa, the head of the Arab League.

Moussa confirms that a Venezuelan peace plan is "under consideration," Al-Jazeera reports.

Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the head of the opposition National Libyan Council, tells Al-Jazeera that he rejects any notion of talks with the Libyan leader.
