Mumbai, Mar 26 (PTI) Several Mumbaikars have participated in the World Wide Fund's 'Earth Hour' campaign tonight by switching off non-essential lights for an hour in their homes, offices and public places. At Mumbai Mayor Shraddha Jadhav's official residence at Shivaji Park in Central Mumbai, the Earth Hour got underway with a large candle light procession. "The Earth Hour is a great concept and will help conserve power and prevent load-shedding," Jadhav said, adding the event is organised to create awareness on climate change and global warming. "This movement will help sensitise individuals toward sustainable living and arrest the depletion of our natural resources," she said. Several organisations and individual volunteers also participated in the campaign in large numbers. Among the prominent places where non-essential, high-power halogens and others lights went off were Mantralaya and New Administrative Buildings, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and several private housing and office complexes across the city. Decorative lights on the Rajiv Gandhi Bandra-Worli sea link were also switched off during the period. Actress Vidya Balan, newly appointed ambassador of the Earth Hour, appealed people to switch off lights for an hour. Actress Minissha Lamba tweeted "today from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm, let's bring out the romance of life with candles." PTI VT NSK
