The accident happened when the bus is believed to have mounted the kerb on Albertbridge Road near Central Station about 2pm.

Six ambulances rushed to the scene to treat the injured as police blocked off the area.

Reports say emergency services had to cut the driver from the bus before he was taken to hospital.

John McPoland, a spokesman for the Northern Ireland ambulance service, was at the scene and said many of the bus passengers were taken to hospital.

The bus mounted the kerb, hit a wall at the side of the pavement and fell onto its side.

"Thankfully no one is seriously hurt - a lot of people are walking wounded," he said.

"The driver is the most seriously injured and he's been taken to the Royal Victoria hospital, but it's not expected his injuries are life-threatening."

Albertbridge Road and Oxford Street remain closed as the scene is cleared.

Police are investigating why the bus overturned in Belfast

A spokesman from the bus company Translink, Ciaran Rogan said it was too early to speculate on what caused the crash.

"At the moment between our engineering staff and the police, who are taking the lead in terms of the investigation, all we know are the facts of the incident," he said.

"The bus mounted the kerb, hit a wall at the side of the pavement and fell onto its side.

"Beyond that we are not in a position to say what caused it."
