Two thousand jobs are being promised in the North East as Nissan gears up to build a new model at its Sunderland car plant.

The Invitation compact car will be produced from the middle of next year with the help of a £9.3m government grant.

Details of the new model were released last month, but the production site was kept a closely-guarded secret.

Nissan's Sunderland factory is already the country's biggest producer of cars with 480,485 vehicles built last year, a UK record.

The Invitation, which will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show, is officially a concept car, but with a confirmed production schedule the final vehicle is expected to be almost identical.

Nissan says the car will be one of the best-equipped in its class, with advanced safety technology that interacts with the "driving environment" and tells the driver what is happening around it.

Nissan's chief executive Carlos Ghosn will be interviewed on Jeff Randall Live tonight at 7pm on Sky News.

The jobs boost comes as more than 2,000 Vauxhall car production jobs are under threat in Cheshire.

General Motors have teamed up with PSA Peugeot Citroen to save more than £1bn over the next five years, sparking fears that the Ellesmere Port factory could be closed.
