Greece's anti-bailout Syriza party has rejected a proposal by the country's president for the creation of a government of technocrats.
The idea was mooted in an attempt to avoid a repeat election after an inconclusive vote on May 6 that has left the country dangerously close to being ejected from the euro.
Three main political parties held talks with President Karolos Papoulias on Monday evening. Greek state TV says that discussions will resume on Tuesday with all parties, except the far-right.
Alexis Tsipras, leader of the radical leftists Syriza which came second on May 6, says he will join these negotiations after missing Monday's meeting.
Meanwhile Antonis Samaras, head of the centre-right New Democracy which won the election, called on other leaders to come together:
"I want to repeat that the people have not only given us a message, but a clear mandate to build a government as much as it is possible, and this (message) was for all of us. So, each one of us must take responsibility."
A week of coalition talks, followed by intervention by the president, has so far failed to bring leaders closer to the creation of a unity government.
