PM David Cameron has opened the door to a referendum on Britain's EU membership to head off a Tory revolt.

He hinted the time may come to give people a say — but only after the euro crisis is settled.

A source said: "The Prime Minister still thinks it is not a good idea to have a referendum right now. But he accepts at some time in the future he is going to have to consult the British people — either at a general election or through a referendum."

Mr Cameron hopes to see off 100 Tory rebels threatening party civil war if there is no vote — and to avoid being outflanked by Labour if leader Ed Miliband pledges a referendum first.

Last night Mr Cameron said: "The fact is the British people are not happy with what they have. And frankly neither am I. Put simply, for those of us outside the eurozone, far from being too little Europe there is too much of it.

"Too much cost, too much bureaucracy, too much meddling in issues that belong to nation states or civil society or, indeed, individuals. Whole swathes of legislation covering social issues, working time and home affairs should, in my view, be scrapped."
