'Dog mauling' inquiry as woman dies in Morden - BBC News

Police are investigating whether a woman, aged 71, found dead at a house in south London was mauled by her daughter's dogs.

Officers were called at 18:25 GMT on Tuesday to Rutland Drive, Morden, where the woman, named locally as Gloria Knowles, was found with a number of injuries.

Five dogs have been seized including two Bordeaux French mastiffs.

Neighbour Kevin Hamilton said he heard screams at about 18:15 GMT.

Dogs barking

He said he was "absolutely devastated" that he had not been able to help his neighbour of 20 years.

He said the dogs, believed by the police to include one black/blue blood American bulldog, an American bulldog and a small mongrel were "lovely dogs".

Mr Hamilton, 65, said Mrs Knowles had been feeding the dogs in the back garden when he heard screams and dogs barking.

He said: "It wasn't a cry for help or anything and I put it down to children being boisterous.

"It wasn't a vicious sounding bark. I didn't recognise it as such."

He added the screams he heard "may well have been the dogs attacking her".

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said no arrests had been made.

"She had sustained a number of injuries. An investigation is under way to establish a cause of death," she added.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place at St Georges Hospital Mortuary on Thursday, said police.
