There's a fascinating sub-plot to the Grand National involving Ballabriggs's owner Trevor Hemmings - and Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Fergie has a half-share in second favourite What A Friend, but the rivalry between the two men extends beyond the racecourse. Hemmings, the former Pontins magnate (below), owns Preston North End - the club that sacked Ferguson's son Darren as manager over Christmas.

Fergie reacted to that dismissal by immediately recalling two Old Trafford players who had been on loan to the Championship strugglers!
