- We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees, says Stephen Elop, President and Chief Executive Office of Nokia. Armed with over 10,000 patent families, Nokia has one of the strongest and broadest IPR portfolios in the wireless industry. Now, if they can just start creating top-notch smartphones to compete with the iPhone in select markets, we would be talking serious business.
The financial structure of the agreement with Apple, that for instance entered the 3G smartphone market courtesy of Nokia technology, consists of a one-time payment payable by Apple as well as on-going royalties to be paid by Apple to Nokia for the term of the agreement.
The specific terms of the contract are confidential. However, Nokia expects that the Apple agreement will have a positive financial impact on Nokia's recently revised outlook for the Q2 2011 of around break-even non-IFRS operating margin for Devices & Services.
Everything counts these days for a giant that will gradually phase out Symbian to focus 100% on Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. Nokia aims to release the first smartphone powered by Windows Phone Mango by the end of 2011, with a steady stream of releases to follow throughout 2012.
