Instead, he declared that Britain would be a "pygmy in the world" unless it was enmeshed in the EU. He announced, not once but several times, that he had spent his political life fighting to implement the European ideal. Only in Lib Dem fantasy land would a senior political figure boast about this just as that project threatened to cause global chaos. Also, his references to Eurosceptics made them sound more like deranged cranks than realists who predicted almost every disaster that has overcome the single currency.
