Corporal Alex Guy, 37, died after being wounded in an ambush on patrol in Helmand on Friday.
His wife Emma, of St Neots, Cambs, said: "Alex was a happy, full-of-life and kind-hearted man with a passion for his work and family."
Cpl Guy, originally from Norwich, was commanding a fire support section of 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, working alongside the Afghan national army in the Nad-e Ali district.
His devastated mother Aileen said: "Alex was a wonderful and loving son, husband, brother, friend and comrade."
Cpl Guy had been in the Army for 19 years and served in Bosnia, Iraq and Northern Ireland. He was the 419th Brit killed in Afghanistan since October 2001.
