Torrential rain causes flooding in Northern United Kingdom - RTE.ie

At least 150 flood warnings and alerts are in place.

Northern England was the worst affected area with dozens of people forced to leave their homes.

A month's rain has fallen in some areas in the past 24 hours.

Flooding has caused widespread travel chaos throughout southern Scotland and the north of England.

Further heavy rainfall is forecast.

The British weather agency Met Office has said that the wettest places in the country were in Cumbria, Lancashire and West Yorkshire.

As much as 100mm of rain fell overnight, south-west Scotland, Northern Ireland and Lancashire also experienced unusually heavy rainfall.

In Dervock in Co Antrim, a man was rescued after he became trapped by flood waters.

Fire crews walked the man to safety just before 5am.
