Team GB chef de mission Andy Hunt revealed the British Olympic Association have been in touch with David Beckham about a "broader role" within London 2012.
Former England captain Beckham had hoped to be named as one of three over-age players in the GB football team, but was in the end not selected by coach Stuart Pearce with Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards preferred.
Speaking at the Team GB squad announcement at Wembley, Hunt said: "We would be delighted and honoured to have David involved more broadly with Team GB in some way."
Beckham, who plays in the United States with Los Angeles Galaxy, played a key role in attracting support to London's bid to stage the Games back in 2005, and looks set for more involvement this summer.
Hunt added: "I totally respect Stuart's professional judgement and decision as to the 18 players he has selected.
"But more broadly in respect of David potentially giving some role within Team GB, that would be fantastic
"I have had some contact with his representatives over the weekend and we will have to wait and see how that moves forward."
Pearce confirmed Beckham would not be able to take up a coaching role within his backroom staff, but praised the midfielder's contribution to the London Games.
"What David has done to bring this bid to these shores is absolutely fantastic and I would champion him for what he has done for the cause," said Pearce.
