Murray resumes rain-hit title fight - The Press Association

Andy Murray is to finish his fourth round battle at Wimbledon, after rain stopped play.

The 25-year-old's game against Marin Cilic was suspended on Monday with Murray a set up and winning 3-1 in the second.

Murray's match on Court One, and others on outside courts, were delayed just before 5pm when drizzle hit the All England Club. As rain continued in the evening, officials decided to postpone play on all courts except Centre Court, where it continued under the roof.

Matches at SW19's show courts will start an hour earlier than usual on Tuesday in an effort to clear the backlog, and Murray and Cilic will resume their match on Court One at noon.

The lengthy delay comes after the Scot narrowly avoided having to finish Saturday's third round clash with Marcos Baghdatis on Monday as he raced to complete it by the curfew time of 11pm on Saturday.

He won as the clock ticked a few minutes past 11pm so was able to relax during Sunday's tournament rest day.

Retired British tennis player Greg Rusedski was among those who said Murray should have been allowed to play on Centre Court again. He tweeted: "A real shame Murray wasn't on centre court, a little mistake from organiser. Need to give him every advantage possible."

The interruption for rain came as the Met Office revealed this June was the wettest since records began, with double the average rain falling during the month.

Fans were left disappointed as they were sent home for the day after seeing only a sparse amount of tennis.

Spectators only get full refunds if there is less than an hour's play, although they can get half the amount they paid if they see between one and two hours of tennis.
