The number of Eastern Europeans living in Britain is equal to 1.5 per cent of the population of their homelands, MPs were told yesterday.

The astonishing revelation effectively means that one in every 67 citizens of eight former communist nations has moved here.

Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia and Estonia all joined the EU in 2004 – giving them unrestricted access to the UK's labour market.

Since then, the number of immigrants from these 'A8' nations, which have 73million people between them, has rocketed from just 94,000 to 1,079,000.

The figures emerged in a Westminster Hall debate on the impact of immigration from Eastern Europe.

Romanians and Bulgarians will also get free access to the UK jobs market from the end of next year when temporary restrictions are lifted.

Tory MP Philip Hollobone said that – if the experience with the A8 nations was anything to go by – the number of Romanians and Bulgarians living here will treble to 425,000.

'If we apply that same rate to the entry of Romania, with 21million people, and Bulgaria, with 7million, the 155,000 presently resident in the UK would climb to some 425,000,' he said.

'What we are going to see is swathes of our countryside built over to accommodate the millions of new arrivals from the European Union, over which we seemingly have little control.'

A string of Tory MPs attacked the Home Office for refusing to estimate how many Romanians and Bulgarians will move to Britain.

The 'transitional controls' in place now include limits on the number of people who can fill low-paid jobs.

From the end of next year, EU rules state these controls must be lifted.

Mr Hollobone said: 'It's a disgrace the Government won't estimate the number of immigrants it expects from Bulgaria and Romania.

'It's bad enough to open our borders to all and sundry, but it adds insult to injury to then not even give the British people an estimate of how many incomers we can expect.'

Home Office officials are acutely aware of the mistakes made by the department prior to the A8 countries joining in 2004. Then, they predicted 13,000 arrivals every year.

Immigration minister Mark Harper yesterday said making predictions was 'a very difficult exercise' influenced by a range of factors.

At risk: With a lack of both empty homes and developed sites where new homes could be built, Green Belt land may have to be sacrificed

He insisted the Government was committed to cutting the 'unsustainable' net number of migrants to the tens of thousands and highlighted figures last week showing a 25 per cent drop in annual incomers.

Home Office sources said officials were looking at restricting access to key public services for migrants who arrive here without a job.

Last week, planning minister Nick Boles said that immigrant families accounted for nearly half of Britain's new housing needs.

People sleeping rough is up by 23%, We need to help our own before we let another load loose on our welfare, NHS and education systems, We cannot afford anymore, Direct them to Brussels or Berlin because something has to give and that something will be the patience of the British people!

I've a suspicion that the decision to build so many houses is a bit like the High Speed Train link to Birmingham that nobody wants. It is part of a grand EU plan. Must we house all those who shouldn't be here and then pay them to stay? No matter how inexpensive the house you need a JOB before you can afford to live in it. The only new employment will be short term in the construction industry. Look at Ireland and Spain, they built themselves into recession with the help of relaxed planning laws and easy loans. Government has abandoned the North. The Tories have abandoned the countryside. Have done with them all and vote UKIP to set us free to be British once more.

We need a new lot of politicians who actually represent the people of this country! We need a Churchill to defend us against the the very people who are supposed to be protecting this country !

Round my part of London: A&Es, Hospitals, GPs surgeries, Fire Stations, Council Services and Met Police are all being cut because Govt. cannot afford them. So, all that can be offered on the green belt presumably to these immigrants are benefits and council houses 'cos there aint any jobs to offer, as there are not enough for those of us already living here!! I blame the political elite who got us into this mess for their own political gains.

Ahh you must love this DM and your xenophobic followers...Eastern European people moving intro your countryside..well the landowners countryside... They'll probably bring some nasty tree disease with them too eh? And steal our babies! And its all the loony lefts fault

We have people who were born here who cannot find anywhere to live, why are we obliged to house immigrants? If they have no money to buy a house then send then back.

There seems to be worldwide conspiracy to bring immigrants into countries that don't want them and to provide them with housing and income. This is the modern way of invading. Just have the government do for the foreigners what they won't do for its citizens.

No!!!! We can't house our own! Britain first everyone else second. Stop this madness now! All European migrants aren't of any benefit to our economy as what they earn here goes back to their homelands! We can't afford to be part of the EU club anymore. All taxes paid should be spent in the UK, after all that's what we all pay taxes for, not for French farmers or Eastern European children that don't even live here. So sick of this! The government must listen to the people, we know better as we're the ones that have to put up with the ghettoes and crime and loss of our jobs to these people!

madness, vote UKIP

Sorry, I don`t understand. Why does Britain have to provide housing for immigrants ?
