Sports briefs: Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia shake hands - Salt Lake Tribune

GOLF • Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia shook hands Monday in Ardmore, Pa., on the U.S. Open practice range at Merion. It was the first time they have seen each other since Garcia jokingly said at an awards dinner in England that he would have Woods over for dinner during the U.S. Open and "we will serve fried chicken." Garcia apologized for the racially insensitive remark the next day at a news conference.

A fan at the U.S. Open took a picture of the handshake and posted it on Twitter.

Woods and Garcia both have news conferences on Tuesday.

• More heavy rain Monday flooded a bunker by the 11th green and filled fairways with large puddles. The course was closed for four hours during the first full day of practice, and then shut down for good later in the afternoon.

The forecast was for mostly dry conditions Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by a 40 percent chance of rain on Thursday for the opening round.

Defending champ Oudin ousted

TENNIS • Melanie Oudin's defense of her Aegon Classic title lasted only 57 minutes, with the American losing 6-3, 6-1 to Croatian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round in Birmingham, England.

The 80th-ranked Oudin struggled in cold and windy conditions in central England, failing to handle the dominant serve of Tomljanovic. The Croat will play top-seeded Kirsten Flipkens.

Oudin beat Jelena Jankovic in straight sets in last year's final of the grass-court tournament, winning her only WTA title. The 21-year-old was a quarterfinalist at the 2009 U.S. Open but has struggled with her consistency since.

Boston to host'16 championships

FIGURE SKATING • Boston has been chosen to host the 2016 World Figure Skating Championships, the first time in seven years the event will be in the United States. Worlds are tentatively scheduled for March 28 to April 3 at the TD Garden, according to the International Skating Union and U.S. Figure Skating.
