Pardew applauds Toon spirit - SkySports

The home team were trailing 2-1 in the latter stages of the Premier League clash but substitute Shola Ameobi netted to hand them a share of the spoils.

Pardew admits the Magpies were a little disappointed not to clinch a win after coming close with several chances in the dying minutes but the manager was bowled over by his side's display.

"It just shows the spirit in the group and the character that we have," Pardew told Sky Sports HD1.

"We're feeling confident and we played very, very well today against one of the top teams.

Slightly disappointed

"We walked off slightly disappointed that we hadn't won it. We had a couple of great chances towards the end.

"You don't want to hold on, you want to win in those situations. Both teams, to be fair, wanted to try and win and that makes for great entertainment.

"But we'll settle for the draw and we're still unbeaten. We're having a great period and we'll take it to the next game.

"I think we're going to be a dangerous side against the top teams and against everybody else."

Pardew hailed the impact of Ameobi and fellow substitute Hatem Ben Arfa, who set up the equaliser.

"We've got players on the bench who can change the game and the same with Tottenham," he added.

Big difference

"They made a big difference. That's what you need at this level."

The manager was disappointed to see his side concede when Rafael van der Vaart converted a penalty late in the first half, but he was impressed by their reaction.

"I thought at the start of the game we struggled and then got a foothold in the game," he said.

"The goal was disappointing really because I thought we were beginning to feel our way into the game.

"Our reaction was great, we got a goal at a good time."
