Actress and model Liz Hurley has become engaged to Australian cricket legend Shane Warne during a golf tournament in Scotland.

Warne proposed to Hurley after dinner on Friday at a hotel in the east coast golf resort of St Andrews, where the sportsman was taking part in a pro-am event.

The couple later posted a Twitter message thanking well-wishers for their congratulations.

The 42-year-old spin legend popped the question in front of other diners in the restaurant of the Old Course Hotel.

When Hurley said "yes" the couple were given a standing ovation.

Pictures showed the couple smiling as they walked arm-in-arm across a golf course on Saturday, with Hurley, 46, wearing a large sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

They were greeted by shouts of congratulations as the pro-am Alfred Dunhill Links Championship got under way, the Mail On Sunday said.

The couple first met at an race meeting in July last year and have since been spotted together regularly.

Hurley is credited with transforming Warne's appearance after he lost weight and was reported to have had plastic surgery, which he denied.

Just a month ago he told an Australian radio station the "radiant glow" of love might have something to do with the change.

"Being in love with somebody is a wonderful feeling. I am lucky to have met Elizabeth... we have met and we are having a great time," said Warne.

When the couple met, Hurley was still married to Indian businessman Arun Nayar but they divorced in December after nearly nine years together and four years of marriage.

Warne's previous romances have sparked almost as much media attention as his performance in cricket matches and his lively love life is widely thought to have cost him the Australian captaincy.

He was divorced in 2006.

Hurley had a long term relationship with actor Hugh Grant in the 1990s but they separated in 2000.

She has a nine-year-old son, Damien, whose father is American tycoon Steve Bing.
