EU summit: overnight agreement; Monti, Italy satisfied - Agenzia Giornalistica Italia

(AGI) Brussels - The 120 billion-euro growth package was agreed at the Brussels summit, with measures to stabilise markets. The agreement came in the middle of the night after almost 15 hours of negotiations, which Mario Monti called "difficult", but that at times were also dramatic. The EU summit approved the expected package of 120 billion euro for 'immediate measures for growth and employment'. However, Italy and Spain, backed by France, after a real tug of war at the negotiating table, received from their European partners, above all from the recalcitrant Germany, the commitment to implement measures to stabilise markets (the so-called anti-spread mechanism) and for the direct capitalisation of banks.
