Beyonce's soundcheck of "The Star-Spangled Banner" from her performance at President Obama's recent inauguration has leaked online.
The soundcheck audio sounds pretty close to the final version fans heard. Following Bey's stellar rendition, news surfaced that the singer had not sang live and used a backing track instead. According to The New York Times, the Marine Band confirmed that the song was pre-recorded.
This is not the first time this has happened. Performers often use a backing track as a contingency in case something goes wrong at major events. Whitney Houston's rendition of the national anthem (regarded as one of the greatest live performances) in 1991 was also lip-synched. Even at President Obama's 2009 inauguration ceremony, worldrenowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma had to "fake" his performance due to frigid temperatures.
