A bruised-looking Vince Cable took to the podium yesterday, seeking to recharge his political reserves using the support of his home crowd at the Liberal Democrat conference.
"The Prime Minister says I am a Jeremiah," the Business Secretary told the Glasgow crowd. "But you will recall from your reading of the Old Testament that Jeremiah was right."
It was characteristic Cable: unapologetic, self-aware and stubborn. It was well received by those in the hall, most of whom were unaware of the rather bizarre turn of events of the previous 36 hours.
