Tell me what you want, what you really, really want: A Spice Girls musical? - The Star-Ledger - NJ.com

The once and future Posh Spice Victoria Beckham says a new musical based on the oeuvre of the Spice Girls will introduce the concept of "Girl Power" -- and, god forbid, Union Jack bustiers, platform sneakers and bikini tops as acceptable formalwear -- to a new generation.

The five members of the zeitgeist-y '90s pop sensation reunited Tuesday to announced details of the musical, "Viva Forever," based on one of their lesser-known singles (of course, they only had nine songs that ever charted on the Billboard 200, and only one to hit 1.) The good news: The book is being written by "Absolutely Fabulous" co-creator Jennifer Saunders and produced by the woman behind "Mamma Mia," which kicked off the latest wave of jukebox musicals a decade ago. The bad news: It's based on the Spice Girls.

The show, which will open in London this fall, will follow the trials and tribulations of an all-girl group that enters a TV talent show. Melanie "Sporty Spice" Chisholm says the show is "better than we could ever have imagined."

A scorecard on jukebox musicals: "Mamma Mia" still packs them in, and "Jersey Boys," which follows the rise of the Four Seasons, is still going strong after seven years. "Rock of Ages," which harnesses hair bands and power ballads of the 1980s, has been playing since 2009, and the Billy Joel-Twyla Tharp musical, "Movin' Out," ran for three years.

But for every "Jersey Boys," there's an "American Idiot" (Green Day, 421 performances), "All Shook Up" (Elvis Presley, 213 performances), "Good Vibrations" (the Beach Boys, 94 performances), "Lennon" (based on "Reno 911" star Thomas Lennon ... okay, John Lennon, 49 performances), and "The Times They Are A-Changing" (Bob Dylan, 28 performances).
