Woman arrested after man found dead at Haverhill house - BBC News

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after police forced their way into a house in Suffolk and found the body of a man in his 70s.

A member of the public reported concern for a resident in Castle Lane, Haverhill, shortly after 22:00 GMT on Friday.

Officers found the body and the woman, believed to be in her 40s and from the Haverhill area, with a head injury.

She is receiving treatment in hospital and was arrested on Saturday afternoon.

She will be moved to a Police Investigation Centre once discharged from hospital, police said.

A cordon remains at the house while officers conduct further inquiries and scenes of crime officers attend.

Formal identification of the man has not taken place and a post-mortem examination is due to be held to ascertain the cause of death.

Suffolk Police appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

A fish a day could keep Alzheimer's at bay: Study - TODAYonline

NEW YORK - Too much junk food shrinks the brain while a diet high in vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids prevents that shrinkage and helps stave off age-related brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, new research has shown.

The study, which was published in the journal Neurology, tracked 104 people in the United States over 12 years. The subjects were all aged 65 and above when the study was launched in 1989.

"The aim was to study the effects of age on dementia risk in people that don't have factors known to increase their risk at the time," said lead investigator Dr Gene Bowman.

The bad news for junk-food junkies is that those with diets high in artery-clogging trans fats were more likely to suffer brain shrinkage and performed poorer on cognitive tests.

Meanwhile, researchers found that people with healthier diets with lots of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins C, D and E, as well as all the B vitamins, showed less shrinkage of the brain.

"It is very exciting to think that people could potentially stop their brains from shrinking and keep them sharp by adjusting their diet," Dr Bowman said. Agencies

Facebook blamed for one-third divorces across globe - Times of India

LONDON: Facebook was cited as a reason for a third of broken marriages last year and is increasingly being used as a source of evidence in divorce cases.

A law firm called Divorce-Online said that 33% of the 5,000 behaviour based divorce petitions filed with the firm in the past year mentioned the site.

"Facebook has become the primary method for communicating with friends for many people," the Daily Mail quoted Mark Keenan, managing director of Divorce-Online, as saying.

"People contact ex-partners and the messages start as innocent, but lead to trouble

"If someone wants to have an affair or flirt with the opposite sex then it's the easiest place to do it," he said.

The most common reasons for Facebook causing problems in relationships were a spouse finding flirty messages, photos of their partner at a party they did not know about or with someone they should not have been with.

"If you are keeping things from your partner, Facebook makes it so much easier for them to find out," Anne-Marie Hutchinson, of Dawson Cornwell Solicitors said.

Hutchinson said that the site could also be used as evidence of unreasonable behaviour.

"If you are complaining that they have a drinking problem and they have posted statuses about going out on the razzle... that could be used," she added.

Apple designer Ive becomes Sir Jony - CNET

Sir Jony

(Credit: Apple)

Will he use an iLance while jousting?

Apple's Jonathan Ive, the industrial designer behind iconic products like the MacBook, the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad, has now become Sir Jony, having been named a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (or KBE) by Queen Elizabeth.

The honor--"for services to design and enterprise"--was announced last night, and Ive will be officially anointed in the coming year by a touch of the sword from the queen.

The London-born Ive received a lesser honor--the title of Commander of the British Empire--in 2006 and has garnered numerous other plaudits, including a Designer of the Year award from the Design Museum in London, the title Royal Designer for Industry from the Royal Society of Arts, and the prestigious Industrial Design Excellence Award in the U.S.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs considered Ive one of his closest associates at the company, telling his biographer, Walter Isaacson, "He understands what we do at our core better than anyone. If I had a spiritual partner at Apple, it's Jony."

Ive is currently Apple's senior vice president of industrial design.

In a statement, Ive said he was "both humbled and sincerely grateful" for the knighthood, which he described as "absolutely thrilling."

"I discovered at an early age that all I've ever wanted to do is design. I feel enormously fortunate that I continue to be able to design and make products with a truly remarkable group of people here at Apple," Ive said.

Syrian opposition fear failure of Arab mission - euronews

Syria's opposition has expressed concerns over the success of the Arab League mission as violence continues to rage across the country.

Some of the latest amateur video available on social networks appears to show more examples of the violent crackdown on anti-government protests.

In Zaid's Damascus suburb, Douma, protesters carried away a man whose leg had been shredded by what they said were nail bombs.

The Arab League mission has met with strong scepticism from the outset over its makeup, its lack of numbers – due to rise from 60 to 150 – and its reliance on government transport.

Despite the presence of the monitors opposition groups say nearly 30 people were killed on Friday.

However, one member of the observer team did denounce the use of snipers: "We've seen it with our own eyes. We want the authorities to remove them immediately. If there's no response within 24 hours, there will be other measures."

Despite his comments the observer then appears to be berated by protestors for not doing enough.

The Arab League says a group of Iraqi monitors who were due to arrive on Friday were delayed and will arrive mid-week, along with members from Gulf states.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil ElAraby said at the outset of the mission that it should take only a week to establish if President Bashar al-Assad was keeping his promises. It would not take a month, he said.

The United Nations estimates more than 5,000 people have been killed across Syria since March.

Tobacco price hike to kick in - TVNZ

Vowing to give up cigarettes may be a New Year's resolution for more smokers than usual this year as the tax on tobacco increases from the first day of 2012.

The last of the three-tiered tax increase will push the cost of the most popular brand of cigarettes to $13.80 for a 20 pack and to $31 for a 30g pack of loose tobacco.

Quitline Chief Executive Paula Snowden said January is a notoriously busy time of year and the tax increase will only increase the number of smokers looking for support.

"80% of smokers wished they'd never started smoking and we expect the January tax jump will be a trigger for many to quit," said Snowden.

"Those who use Quitline support are up to five times more likely to succeed than going it alone."

Snowden said the tax hike will mean smokers can look forward to saving $4500 in 2012 if they give up in time for the New Year.

"For a family with one adult smoking one packet a day, that equates to a tank of petrol a week.

"Over a month it's an average week's rent or a car payment - serious money out of the family budget," said Snowden.

In January 2011, 9,383 people quit smoking with the help of Quitline - almost double the number who used the service in January 2010.

Anyone wanting support can call Quitline for free on 0800 778 778 or visit www.quit.org.nz for online support.

Man Utd defeat by Blackburn a disaster - Ferguson - BBC Sport

Third goal was the killer - Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson described Manchester United's 3-2 home defeat by bottom-club Blackburn as "a disaster".

After battling back from 2-0 down, United were dealt the final blow 10 minutes from time courtesy of a goal from Grant Hanley.

"It is a disaster," said the United manager, whose side failed to replace Manchester City at the top of the Premier League on his 70th birthday.

"I never expected it. We lost two terrible goals and you can't do that."

United fell behind to two strikes from Yakubu, either side of the break, before Dimitar Berbatov hauled his side back level with two of his own in quick succession.

However, Blackburn stunned United late on, when 20-year-old Hanley beat keeper David de Gea to Morten Gamst Pedersen's corner, and again rose highest to head in the follow-up.

"We all could have done better," he said, when asked about De Gea. "It was a bad goal to lose.

"At 2-2, I thought we were going to win it. It looked like the momentum was with us, but that third goal was a killer."

Ferguson pointed to the injuries in defence that forced him to field senior players out of their usual positions.

"We've had problems with four central defenders out," added the Scot. "We missed Michael Carrick's craft in the middle. We played Park Ji-sung and Rafael in centre midfield, but they aren't centre midfielders.

Kean sees United win as platform for survival

Phil Jones, who moved back into central defence from midfield as a result of injuries, was more critical of the defeat by his former club.

"I am gutted," he said. "[And it was on] the manager's birthday as well. We weren't at the races. Too slow, too laboured. Not quick enough.

"The injuries don't help. But they are no excuse. We were nowhere near good enough.

"They punished us and they thoroughly deserved their win. It will be a bad New Year's Eve.

"I feel worse today than when we got smashed 7-1 last season playing for Blackburn. That puts into perspective how disappointed I am."

Rovers boss Steve Kean was delighted with the victory which follows the draw at Liverpool last week.

"To come to a place like this and get a result is up there with our best," he said, with his club going into 2012 off the bottom of the table.

"As soon as it went to 2-1, we were thinking it was going to be tough. And at 2-2, it would have been a good point."

Kean, who some fans of the club want to see leave, paid particular praise to the young players, such as scorer Hanley, Adam Henley and Josh Morris.

"We built on what we did at Anfield [1-1 draw against Liverpool], although maybe the side was a little bit younger today," he continued.

Hanley delighted with scoring winner

"The lads that came through the academy, along with the senior guys, can all take credit.

"We're going through a transition period. We have new owners and although I'm not new to the club, I'm new to the position.

"We're trying to integrate the young players and develop the backbone of the club."

Hanley, scorer of the winner, said the young Rovers team have had to "grow up quickly".

"It was a great result today," he commented. "We got the organisation and shape right.

"Playing in games like this is good for the young boys. It puts them under pressure early and forces them to grow up quickly."

David Tennant wedding: Georgia Moffett and Doctor Who star marry on New Year's Eve - Daily Mail

By Sara Nathan

Last updated at 5:22 PM on 31st December 2011

Doctor Who star David Tennant will be getting married to the daughter of former Timelord Peter Davison today, the Daily Mail can reveal.

The dashing actor, who is credited with helping to revive the BBC sci-fi series, will tie the knot with pretty Georgia Moffett in an intimate New Year's Eve ceremony in London.

The couple already have a baby daughter called Olive, who was born in March, and have been making plans to marry ever since Mr Tennant proposed last Christmas.

Last night, a friend said: 'David and Georgia can't wait to get married, they are madly in love.

'They have tried to keep everything quiet and the wedding is for family and closest friends only.'

Even by a Time Lord's standards, their romance is a fairly head-spinning concept.

Mr Tennant, 40, who played the tenth Doctor who, met his fiance when she had a guest role in a 2008 episode – playing the Doctor's daughter, Jenny.

Miss Moffett's father, in turn, had played the fifth Time Lord.

The blonde actress, 27, whose mother is actress Sandra Dickinson, already has a nine-year-old son called Tyler whom she gave birth to in 2002, when she was just 17.

She brought him up alone and has never publicly revealed who the father is.

She then set up home with her Where The Heart Is co-star Adam Harvey in 2004. The couple split up two years later but they remained friends and Harvey continued to be a presence in her son's life.

Mr Davison, 60, has said of his daughter's relationship with Mr Tennant: 'It's great because David is a genuinely nice guy.

'I'm delighted Georgia has found happiness because she hasn't always had an easy life.'

Speaking about his future son-in-law, Mr Davison told the Mail in July that Mr Tennant was 'besotted' with his baby daughter.

He said: 'I suspect that, crucially, Georgia wasn't overawed by David. He's a really nice guy, but a lot of people are intimidated by actors who've played The Doctor. I've been asked to pose for photos with fans who've been shaking beside me, just because I played The Doctor.

Nice guy: Peter Davison, left, who played the fifth Doctor, has said he is delighted that his daughter will marry the tenth Doctor, David Tennant

'I suspect that goes on too with David, who, like me, is intimidating without doing anything to intimidate. Georgia was able to get over that, partly because she's strong and courageous, and partly because she grew up around an actor who played The Doctor. She was never fazed by meeting TV actors when she was a child – it's second nature to her.'

He said the couple would opt for a conventional and un-showbiz wedding, saying: 'I very much doubt they'll have a Doctor Who themed wedding, for example. I don't think that's their "thing."'

Mr Davison, who also has two sons by his second wife Elizabeth Morton, was the Doctor that Tennant loved watching when he was growing up.

And it appears the admiration is mutual. Davison told the Daily Mail that Tennant was 'a very fine Doctor Who'.

Prior to dating Mr Tennant, Miss Moffett revealed in an interview: 'David is dishy, isn't he? He's not only a good-looking but he is such a lovely, sweet guy.'

Mr Tennant and his fiancee may already have a minister on stand-by to oversee their nuptials.

The actor's father is the Rev Sandy Mcdonald, a former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. His beloved mother Helen died from cancer in 2007.

Miss Moffett is not the first actress whom Mr Tennant, whose role was taken over by Matt Smith, has dated.

In October 2007, He parted ways with actress Sophia Myles after a two-year relationship, following her move to Hollywood.

They, too, met on set - when Myles played Madame de Pompadour in a 2006 Doctor Who episode.

I think I speak for women everywhere when I say...DAMN!!!

Aww Congratulations to them both. He seems a good guy and bet he is a great laugh to be around. Loved him in Casanova!

So romantic ... I'm kind of jealous of her because David is so great, but I'm happy for them too, they seem good together

Many congratulations to them. They seem like a lovely couple. (Sob!)

How lovely! Hope it is a wonderful day for them.

Thrilled: Helena Bonham Carter is made a CBE in the New Year Honours list

Helena Bonham Carter tops the bill for showbusiness honours as she is made a CBE.

The Oscar-nominated actress is recognised for her services to drama following her performance as the Queen Mother in The King's Speech.

She is joined by Ronnie Corbett, who is also appointed a CBE, writer and  broadcaster Clive James, CBE, TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, OBE, former It's A Knockout host Stuart Hall, OBE, and actor David  Harewood, MBE.

Miss Bonham Carter, 45, said she will accept her appointment in memory of her father, Raymond, who died in 2004 after many years of serious illness following a brain tumour.

She added: 'I am thrilled, though not sure that I deserve it.

'I always thought my father deserved a medal for facing 25 years of chronic disability with quiet daily heroism so I am delighted to accept such a wonderful honour in his memory.

'I am wondering does it mean I get to command, because at the moment it's my four-year-old daughter who does the commanding in our household. Must inform her of the change in situation.'

The mother of two made her Hollywood breakthrough 25 years ago with her role in A Room With  A View.

Since then, she has appeared in blockbusters including Fight Club, Alice in Wonderland and Planet Of The Apes – where she met her partner, film director Tim Burton.

Famed for her eccentric style of dressing, all eyes will be on her when she meets the Queen – who is said to have enjoyed the actress's portrayal of her late mother.

Ronnie Corbett's CBE will go alongside the OBE he was awarded by the Queen in 1978 along with his long-term comedy partner  Ronnie Barker.

The 81-year-old is rewarded for his services to entertainment and to charity after more than 50 years on TV screens.

Previously, the diminutive star  questioned why there were not  more talented entertainers receiving honours.

Lorraine Kelly's OBE was awarded for services to charity and the Armed Forces.

The 52-year-old former GMTV  presenter launched UK Armed Forces Day in Edinburgh this year. Last night she said: 'I'm so thrilled and deeply honoured.'

Starting her career in journalism on her local paper, the East Kilbride News, she soon moved to broadcasting, becoming Scotland correspondent for TVam.

Happy: Stuart Halls OBE is for services to broadcasting and charity

The mother of one has supported a number of charities including  Poppyscotland, Freedom from Fistula and the Muscle Help Foundation, as well as raising money for Comic Relief.

Clive James, who arrived in Britain from Australia in 1962, receives his CBE for services to literature and the media.

A father of two, he is married to academic Prue Shaw. He was diagnosed with leukaemia, kidney failure and lung disease in 2010, but is now recovering and continuing his work.

Stuart Hall's OBE is for services to broadcasting and charity. The 82-year-old presenter, who hosted It's A Knockout for ten years in the 1970s and 1980s, continues to work as a sports reporter for BBC Radio 5 Live.

David Harewood receives his MBE after starring in the ITV series The Vice and portraying Nelson Mandela in a one-off BBC drama.

The 46-year-old also played Martin Luther King in the stage production of The Mountaintop, which won Best New Play at the Olivier Awards and has recently transferred to Broadway with Samuel L Jackson playing the lead role.

He told the Daily Mail: 'I'm absolutely chuffed and nearly fell off my chair when I read the letter.'

I absolutely adore Helena Bonham Carter, she can do wrong in my eyes. I think she does a grand job of representing us Brits so good on her. - Elizabeth, London, 31/12/2011 1:44 Representing us Brits as what? Snobby, plum in your mouth, badly dressed, rude? Speak for yourself!

About time all these actors and tv presenters, all very highly paid, stopped getting this ridiculous "recognition" Their recognition is seen in the bank balances for God's sake! Give it to the people who put others before self and don't see the financial benefits. The people who give generously of time (and in some cases money) in voluntary work amongst those that the rest of us like to think our taxes take care of but don't...the homeless, the sick and the elderly. How about seeking out those that have worked (yes, maybe for wages) in jobs that no-one else wants to do, the bin men, road sweepers. I could name name more. But highly (and over) paid actors etc. rubbish!

Lorraine Kelly????? why???? why not honour our REAL heroes - solders, fireman, policeman, nurses - these are our REAL unseen heroes - not actresses - or TV presenters - they have the luxury or earning more money by doing their jobs in the warm - why not watch again the programme on the other evening - the award ceremony where the maimed and injured meet their rescuers?

Celebrities receiving 'gongs' for their services to entertainment are not of interest to me. Celebrities receiving awards for charity work, fair play to them. What I would actually like to see is the NON celebs who work tirelessly to help others without a big pay packet for their few hours of work on screen to back them up. Show us the real people who deserve these awards!

lorraine kelly!?!?!?!.........need i say any more.......

Congratulations Helena Bonham Carter, a well deserved accolade for an incredible actress.

Lorraine Kelly? OMG nevermind OBE

All these awards are made to people who did a job of work for which they were very well paid, the Charity work was voluntary for which they all received a high level of publicity which did them no harm whatever especially when 'The Book' was published. I don't recall seeing any Lifeboat crewmen getting anything AGAIN this year for their Services to Humanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The whole system is stained with sleaze.

So what exactly has HBC done to deserve a CBE? Perhaps if she'd won an Oscar it might have been different. Too many celebrities seem to be honoured for just doing their work and being highly paid for it too. It demeans the whole honours system of selfless dedication or doing something beyond the norm.

Ronnie Corbet should be knighted.

New Year's Eve celebrations: Spectacular fireworks across the world welcome 2012 - Daily Mail

By Pamela Owen

Last updated at 6:27 PM on 31st December 2011

Spectacular fireworks have lit up the night skies as countries across the globe celebrate the New Year, including Australia, Singapore, Japan and China.

More than a million people gathered at mass at vantage points along the harbour to watch the pyrotechnics display in Sydney, Australia, which featured the arch of the bridge as its focal point.

This year's theme was 'Time to Dream' and it is hoped it will help inspire those who have had a particularly bad 2011 to look forward to the year ahead.

Some of the fireworks exploded into shapes of clouds - because every one has a silver lining - and a series of colourful lights were beamed into the centre of the bridge forming an 'endless rainbow'.

The New Year's Eve party on the island of Samoa started a whole day earlier than normal after the South Pacific nation moved 24 hours into the future, making it the first to see in the new year.

People began celebrating as soon as the clocked ticked over from Thursday, December 29, skipping Friday and moving straight onto Saturday, December 31 at 12.01am.

Samao and neighbouring Tokelau lie near the date line in the Pacific Ocean and both islands decided to realign themselves from the Americas side to the Asia side in order to be more in line with major trading partners. It is hoped the move will help improve the economy.

Pools and beaches have been packed with Samoans and tourists who are keen to be the first to celebrate rather than the last.

Elsewhere across globe millions of people are preparing to say goodbye to a year that saw mass uprisings in several Arab countries, the deaths of Osama Bin Laden, Muammar Gaddafi and Kim Jong-il.

It was also a year of economic turmoil which saw an endless string of natural disasters that devastated several countries across the world.

In London a dazzling fireworks display is expected to attract up to 250,000 people.

The London Eye will be the focal point for the pyrotechnics, which London Mayor Boris Johnson said would be a fitting way to mark the start of an extraordinary year for the city.

There will be some 12,000 fireworks, producing 50,000 projectiles, launched during the display, which is triggered by Big Ben's chimes and lasts for 11 minutes and 15 seconds.

Mr Johnson said: 'A glittering display will light up the sky to herald the start of 2012, the most extraordinary and exciting year we are likely to see in our lifetime in this city.

'We will stage an incredible Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will put us in the global spotlight and spur the long-term rejuvenation of east London and bring benefits to the whole capital.

'From the magic of the Games, to the Diamond Jubilee, and the London 2012 Festival to our own outdoor arts festival, we will welcome the world with thrilling events in every corner of the capital, to create a summer like no other.'

Describing the planned show, a spokesman from the Mayor of London's office said: 'Without wanting to give too much away, it describes London: diverse, quirky, surprising, evolving, inspirational.

'There is a nod to the nostalgic past, but, like the city, it is very contemporary and of course it looks ahead to an amazing year for the capital.'

London-themed songs will accompany the fireworks, which are expected to be watched on television by millions of people around the world.

Some 3,000 police officers will be on duty overnight to deal with the crowds expected to descend on the capital, not only on the banks of the Thames to watch the fireworks but also in Trafalgar Square.

Some will be stationed on podiums to give them a bird's-eye view of any troublemakers in the crowds.

Chief Superintendent Julia Pendry, of Scotland Yard, said: 'New Year's Eve is a special time of the year and we want people to enjoy it to the full.

'Make sure you look after yourself and those around you. Officers will be out and about to deter criminals and keep crowds safe.

'New Year's Eve in central London is extremely busy so do come prepared and wrap up warm, as you may have to wait to prevent overcrowding. The viewing area does fill up really quickly and each area will be closed off by the organisers once it reaches its capacity.'

She urged people to consider watching the fireworks on TV instead, as sometimes the viewing area fills up as early as 8pm.

All travel in London will be free from 11.45pm on New Year's Eve until 4.30am on New Year's Day. Road closures will be in place in the city from 4pm on December 31.

British Transport Police have advised travellers to expect queues on their journey home from the centre of London.

New Year Honours 2012: Knighthood for Tory donor Paul Ruddock and CBE for ... - Daily Mail

  • Ex-convict Gerald Ronson and Conservative Party supporter Paul Ruddock both honoured
  • David Cameron accused of being 'out of touch' with decent British people
  • Government source says Prime Minister has no personal involvement in deciding who receives honours
  • Founder of online gambling company bet365 also appointed OBE

A disgraced property tycoon and a hedge fund trader who cashed in on the credit crunch are both in the New Year Honours list.

Ex-convict Gerald Ronson – the great survivor of the Guinness share-trading scandal – is made a CBE. And there is a knighthood for Tory donor Paul Ruddock, who has given more than 500,000 to party coffers since 2003.

His firm, Lansdowne Partners, made a staggering 100million from the financial crash by betting that the price of Northern Rock shares would fall and also made millions in a matter of days by predicting the likely slide of other banking shares.

Controversial: Ex-convict Gerald Ronson, pictured left with wife Gail, is appointed CBE while Tory donor Paul Ruddock, right, is to be knighted

The honours sparked a cross-party war of words, with Labour accusing David Cameron of cronyism, but Downing Street insisting that the Prime Minister had nothing to do with the decisions.

Michael Dugher, Labour's Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, said: 'David Cameron promised to clean up politics, but in office he has shown he is utterly out of touch with decent British people. He is giving a knighthood to Paul Ruddock, who made millions from the collapse of Northern Rock and has given over 500,000 to the Tories.

'This tells you everything you need to know about the Tories' priorities. When millions of families are struggling to get by, it's the Tories' friends in the City who get the rewards.'

A member of the Treasury Select Committee, John Mann, described the knighthood for Mr Ruddock as a 'disgrace'. The Labour MP for Bassetlaw said: 'The country is sick to death of bankers getting knighthoods from successive governments.

'It is extraordinary that when there are so many hard working people who have done a lot for this country, it is people who have caused us so many problems that are getting awarded. Small business owners who went under and people who lost their jobs when Northern Rock failed will be extremely angry.'

A Government source stressed that the Prime Minister has no personal involvement in deciding who receives honours and dismissed any suggestion of impropriety. The decision, said the source, was taken by an independent committee in recognition of Mr Ruddock's commitment to the arts.

Donating to a political party is not a bar to an honour but the independent committee is made aware of any donations.

Within Government there was anger at Labour's decision to try to make political capital out of the issue, not least because former Capita boss Rod Aldridge, who has given Labour 1million, is knighted in today's list.

A Government source said: 'This criticism is pretty rich, coming from a Labour government that gave Fred Goodwin a knighthood – they should wind their necks in.'

Others from the business world whose honours might raise eyebrows include Denise Coates, founder and chief executive of the online gambling company bet365. She receives the CBE for services to the community and business.

The daughter of Stoke City FC owner Peter Coates, she has a 750million fortune and was this year ranked the eighth-richest woman in the Sunday Times Rich List.

Property tycoon and philanthropist Ronson, 72, who was jailed in 1990 for his part in the Guinness scam, has been honoured for services to charity. It is rare for a former prisoner to be bestowed with such an honour.

Indeed, one of his co-defendants, the late Jack Lyons, was stripped of his knighthood after they were convicted along with two other top City figures. Lyons, who was spared a 30-month term because of his poor health, was knighted by the 1973 Labour government and had his title taken away by John Major.

Ronson founded Heron Group – now Heron International Plc – when he was 17, brought self-service petrol stations to the UK in 1960s and was once the 14th-richest person in Britain and worth 548million.

In 1990 he was, with Lyons, Ernest Saunders and Anthony Parnes, convicted over Guinness's 2.7billion takeover of the Scottish drinks group Distillers.

The fraud had the effect of boosting the Guinness share price. As it rose, the group's offer to Distillers' shareholders increased in value, helping Guinness fend off a bid from rival Argyll and secure the deal.

Ronson was convicted of conspiring to create a false market, false accounting and one of theft. He was fined 5million and sentenced to a year, but freed after six months for good behaviour.

He has always protested his innocence, saying he did not knowingly act dishonestly.

A father of four, he is also the uncle of chart-topping musician Mark Ronson.

He has raised more than 100million for, and donated more than 30million to, charities such as the Community Security Trust, NSPCC, the Prince's Trust and Jewish Care.

Asked if Ronson's conviction had any influence over the decision to award him a CBE, a Cabinet Office spokesman said every nomination for an honour was considered on its own merits.

Other former prisoners to be honoured in the past include footballer Tony Adams, who was jailed for drink-driving in 1990 and made an MBE 14 years later. And Mick Jagger was knighted in 2002, 35 years after being jailed for possessing drugs. The sentence was reduced on appeal to a conditional discharge.

Paul Ruddock, 53, becomes a Knight Bachelor for services to the arts in today's honours list.

During the credit crunch in 2007 and 2008 the activities of 'short sellers' enraged politicians who were trying to shore up plunging bank shares.

Many observers blamed the practice – based on traders selling stock, allowing the price to fall and then buying it back – for the bailout funded by taxpayers.

Short-sellers were accused of targeting Halifax owner HBOS in particular before it was rescued by Lloyds and then the taxpayer.

Mr Ruddock has given 551,598.42 to the Tories since 2003. He is one of the City's wealthiest men, with a fortune estimated at 280million.

Among his philanthropic work, he is chairman of the Victoria and Albert Museum, for which he has helped raise more than 120million.

Delighted: Peter Bazalgette, the man who brought Big Brother to UK screens, has been given a knighthood for services to broadcasting

Delighted: Peter Bazalgette, the man who brought Big Brother to UK screens, has been given a knighthood for services to broadcasting

Peter Bazalgette has the dubious distinction of being the man who brought Big Brother – the epitome of downmarket reality TV – to UK screens.

Despite what many will regard as a less than enriching contribution to British life, the media executive has been given a knighthood for services to broadcasting.

The 58-year-old was also credited with being instrumental in the rise of lifestyle and make-over shows, having been behind series such as Ground Force, Changing Rooms and Ready Steady Cook.

Yesterday Baz, as he is known within the TV industry, said the honour was a 'delightful compliment'.

Bazalgette, great great grandson of civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, oversaw the launch, and several series, of Big Brother for Endemol as well as shows such as Fame Academy, Restoration and Deal Or No Deal.

While he did not invent the format for Big Brother he was credited with playing a major part in making the show a success.

During his time at the company the reality series was involved in a number of controversies including showing a couple apparently having sex, albeit under the covers, on Teen Big Brother in 2003.

Five years ago, in the 'celebrity' version of the show, viewers were treated to the dubious privilege of seeing maverick MP George  Galloway dressed in a cat costume and as a vampire, while more recent participants include Sally Bercow, wife of the Commons Speaker.

One critic has accused Bazalgette of doing more to 'debase' TV over the past decade than anyone else.

In recent years he has acted largely as a consultant to the TV industry and for digital media.

He has also written about the business of TV formats, with his book Billion Dollar Game published in 2005.

Bazalgette said he viewed the award as an acknowledgment of the work of independent TV production firms.

After graduating from Cambridge University, Bazalgette joined the BBC's news trainee scheme,  moving on to become a researcher for That's Life and then a reporter for Man Alive. Moving behind the cameras, he produced the long-running series Food And Drink before setting up his own company Bazal, later to be absorbed into the Dutch TV giant Endemol.

He went on to become Endemol's chief creative officer, leaving the company in 2007.

Bazalgette is president of the Royal Television Society, deputy chairman of English National Opera and the National Film and Television School, and has served on the board of Channel 4.

In January this year he was made a non-executive director to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport for his 'business acumen' and 'particular insight into a broad spectrum of media issues'.

Another successful TV executive, Paul Smith, the man behind Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, is made a CBE.

He was also executive producer of the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

It is sickening that our Queen dubs these people to be a knight of the realm and no your mayesty "we are not amused",It would be nice to see some courage from the elder royals as opposed to the mockery you have been coerced into by rewarding corruption. I remain your obedient servant (for now) jtr

How can creating an on-line gambling company be seen as a service to the community? I must be missing something here. Surely there was a misunderstanding about Big Brother. I think it should have read "for disservices to broadcasting". - meangelo, Wonder where these days!, 31/12/2011 10:26 BET 365 are one of the largest employers in Stoke-on-Trent, a very deprived area where jobs are very hard to find. They also do a lot for the community via owning Stoke City FC.

These knighthoods are no different to a sham wedding as they are done for the wrong reasons. It's time for Cameron to put forward his Christian values about honesty & lead by example.

Obscene.

...but we can't give a knighthood to Ronnie Corbett :o(

Lester Piggot LOST his Knighthood for going to prison, how come these guys are eligible for a gong? Give Lester his back - he paid his dues and did his time!!! Jeffrey Archer didn't lose his! The whole system needs an overhaul but they can't afford to lose the money they get from these megalomaniacs! Anyone brave enough to try to make it illegal for sponsors to get a gong would be thrown out of the party with the dogs set after him!!

They think we are all halfwits.

I feel sorry for those who deserved their honours because they were recommended by communities whom they served, often in a minor role but ready to give their time and effort. This makes the honours list look even more suspicious than ever and Cameron will do nothing about it as he will be looking for a place in the House of Lords.

WHY IS ALWAYS THE RICH AND SLEAZY THAT GET KNIGHTHOODS IS IT BECAUSE THEY ARE GIVEN OUT BY THE RICH AND SLEAZY PIGS AND TO KEEP THE PEASANTS HAPPY GIVE THEM THE MINOR HONOURS.

Make 2012 the year the UK made a commitement to be democrasy: that Her Majesty will be our last monarch; an end to the House of Lords, unelected peers and honours; and the end of the established church!

Astronomers have discovered the first Earth-sized planets, which are orbiting a star similar to our own Sun.

It's thought that the planets are now too hot for anything to survive on them, but scientists believe they would've once been cool enough for life to exist.

The planets have been called Kepler 20f and Kepler 20e because they were found by Nasa's Kepler telescope.

Venezuela offers surgery to remove breast implants - BusinessWeek

Venezuela's top health official says free operations will be provided to women to remove faulty French-made breast implants.

Health Minister Eugenia Sader says women with implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese may go to any hospital that carries out plastic surgery in order to have the implants removed.

France's health system has recommended that women with the PIP implants get them replaced, and has agreed to pay for surgeries that could total millions of dollars. In Brazil and Argentina, however, health officials just recommend checkups.

According to Venezuela's state news agency, Sader says the free procedure will simply be to remove the implants and will not include replacing them.

Russian spacecraft to crash - Telegraph.co.uk

They said they are expecting fragments of the probe to fall to Earth anywhere between 51.4 degrees north of the Equator and 51.4 degrees south, covering much of the planet's most densely populated areas.

Phobos-Grunt, which cost more than £100m to build, was designed to collect rock samples from the Martian moon, Phobos during a two and a half year mission.

Having launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, it separated from its booster rocket 11 minutes in, but failed to fire out of Earth's orbit.

This is the latest in a series of Russian launch failures that have raised concerns over the state of space industries in the country.

Engineers in Russia and the European Space Agency had tried to propel the spacecraft away from the Earth's orbit, but were unsuccessful.

Earlier this year, debris from a falling Nasa satellite approximately half the size also came crashing to Earth. No one was hurt.
