Sharp failing to meet iPhone 5 deadline – report - RT

Japanese electronics company Sharp has not yet started to mass produce screens for Apple's next iPhone, even though its 12 days away from hitting the market, according to reports. The supplier's credit rating was cut by S&P to 'junk'.

The Japanese display maker's output of screens has fallen due to high production costs, a source told Reuters on Friday, not specifying however how grave the underproduction is.

In early August Sharp President Takashi Okuda said his company would begin mass production and shipments from its Kameyama plant in central Japan which makes screens for Apple this month, though Reuters reports Sharp has declined to acknowledge that Apple is a customer.

Sharp reported heavy losses recently, and on Friday Standard & Poor's cut its credit rating on Sharp to junk status.

"Sharp's liquidity position has weakened, and the company is highly dependent on short-term borrowings in light of weak internal cash flow and a less favorable funding environment," S&P said in a statement. Earlier Sharp said it lost about $1.76 billion in the April-June quarter cautioning of a bigger-than-expected full-year loss.

However, Sharp is not the only source of screens for Apple's products. The US tablet computer maker is also buying displays from Japan Display and South Korea's LG. The most anticipated premiere of the year may be on schedule and there will be enough devices in stores for eager customers.

The new iPhone screens will be thinner than those used by its predecessors – with the so-called in-cell panels, with the new technology eliminating the touch-screen layer found in current iPhones. The panels will extend 4 inches corner to corner, appearing 30% bigger than current iPhones, according to Reuters.

Sharp's shares lost 13% on Friday as uncertainty swirled around talks with Hon Hai Precision Industry for the Taiwanese company to buy a 9.9% stake in its fellow Apple supplier.

Nokia, Microsoft head for "Last Chance Saloon" - Reuters Canada

By Sinead Carew and Bill Rigby

NEW YORK/SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp and Nokia Oyj are loading up for their best -- and possibly last -- shot at denting a smartphone market dominated by Apple Inc's iPhone and Google Inc's Android mobile software.

If the new Lumia phones do not appeal to consumers when they are unveiled next Wednesday, it could mean the end for Nokia, and a serious blow to Microsoft's attempts to regain its footing in the mobile market, analysts and investors said.

"This is very high stakes," said Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley. "Nokia bet everything on Windows, and if this doesn't succeed the next step might be having to do what's best for shareholders, and that might include selling off key assets or selling the whole company."

The Finnish handset maker has logged more than 3 billion euros in operating losses in the last 18 months, forcing it to cut 10,000 jobs and pursue asset sales.

Its share of the global smartphone market has plunged to less than 10 percent from 50 percent during its heyday before the iPhone was launched in 2007.

For Microsoft, a successful Lumia launch would convince more handset makers and carriers to support its latest phone software, which is based on the same code as the upcoming Windows 8 computing system, and promises faster performance and a customizable start screen.

Windows phones have only captured 3.7 percent of the global smartphone market, according to Strategy Analytics. Android phones have 68 percent, while Apple has 17 percent.

The new Lumia phones will hit the market just as the world of Android reels from a potentially crushing legal blow, and as Research In Motion Ltd's BlackBerry continues its decline.   Continued...

Cheryl: Will 'talking the face off us - that's why we crashed'

Cheryl Cole claims will.i.am was to blame for their recent car crash because he was talking so much.

The Girls Aloud singer and her manager were involved in an accident in Los Angeles on Wednesday when he hit a parked car with his Cadillac and Cheryl says the Black Eyed Peas star's non-stop chatter caused the incident.

When asked by Capital Breakfast co-presenter Lisa Snowdon if will.i.am was that bad a driver, Cheryl replied: "That bad a talker, I would say. He was talking the face off us… He was talking about Nasa and Mars and his song."

Both Cheryl and will.i.am suffered minor injuries and while they are OK now, the 'Under the Sun' singer has got her arm in sling, which she admits it's not very comfortable.

Cheryl - who flew back to London after the accident - said: "You know what, I think it's actually hurting more to have it in the sling than it does when it's not in there. I was just told to wear it for three days. I'm following doctor's orders."

Cheryl - who divorced cheating husband Ashley Cole in 2010 and is now dating dancer Tre Holloway - also revealed how she is writing an autobiography as she's fed up with lies being written about her.

She told ES magazine: "The amount I've had to read and endure and cry about and deal with has become very frustrating. I was always happy to keep my mouth shut, but it's like when a bully slaps someone and finally I've had enough."

Wildfires rip through Spain's package holiday heartland - Channel 4 News

One person dies and several thousand are evacuated as wildfires rage out of control in the Costa del Sol in southern Spain.

The fire broke out near the port city of Malaga late on Thursday and raced westward, fanned by strong winds and high temperatures.

On Friday it reached the edge of the tourist resort of Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

Two people suffered minor burns when the blaze threatened a housing estate in the north of the resort, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people to a sports centre.

The Foreign Office said "several hundred" Britons have been evacuated from the popular tourist area, including around 300 who have relocated to shelters.

There have been no reports of any injuries to British citizens.

Spanish firefighters attempted to control the fires backed by aircraft and helicopters dumping water on the flames.

"It is dangerous because the fire fighters are risking a lot," a local resident told Spanish news agency Atlas. "Even with the strong winds and clouds they are getting very close. There were fifty planes this morning."

Dry weather

Another resident said: "I am very scared. The fire was at the beginning of the street and we couldn't even hear an ambulance arriving or a siren."

Local authorities do not know how the fire started, but said they hoped to bring it under control later on Friday because the wind had dropped.

Unusually dry weather in Spain has resulted in wildfires burning thousands of hectares of land this summer, and temperatures have hit record highs in some regions.

Thousands of people were evacuated earlier this month in the Canary Islands, while four people died in fires in the border area between France and Catalonia, in northeast Spain, in July.

Millions of tourists visit the Costa del Sol every year and hundreds of thousands of expatriates from northern Europe live on the coastal belt.

Ponzi fraud 'ripped apart' family - BBC News

A father of two has described how his family was "ripped apart" after being left penniless by a fraudulent £10m investment scheme in Majorca.

Charles Dewey, from Somerset, said his family was "left with nothing" after losing £300,000 due to the scam.

A couple from West Yorkshire and a Dorset accountant have been jailed for their part in the Ponzi scheme.

Bradford Crown Court heard that instead of investing clients' money, the trio had used it to fund a luxury lifestyle.

John Hirst, 61, of Huddersfield Road, Brighouse, West Yorkshire, was jailed for nine years for his part in the Ponzi scheme.

His estranged wife, Linda Hirst, 61, of Woking, Surrey, will serve two-and-a-half years for money laundering.

Richard Pollett, 70, of Poole, Dorset, was jailed for six-and-a-half years. He was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud.

'Nasty lesson'

The court heard the Hirsts enjoyed luxury holidays and lavish wedding celebrations in Las Vegas and Majorca with the proceeds of the scheme.

Mr Dewey said he had moved with his young family to Majorca near where the fraudsters were operating their Ponzi scheme.

He said Hirst and Pollett had "marked" his family as soon as they arrived on the island.

After losing everything, his family had been left living on benefits, Mr Dewey said.

"It's had a huge effect on us really, it's made me doubt people from a trust point of view," he said.

"The destruction of trust is a very nasty lesson to learn aged 50, together with I'm now having to start life again like a student."

Mr Dewey highlighted Hirst as a man who had "ripped our lives apart".

The trio behind the scheme were "evil, evil people", said Mr Dewey.

"They've shown little or no remorse and I think the term they've got is a reflection on what they've done," he said.

While relieved that "justice had been brought to bear", Mr Dewey said he and his family would have to live with the consequences of the scam for the rest of their lives.

Actor Bruce Willis has poked fun at the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal in a hilarious Die Hard parody.

The action star, reprising his role as tough detective John McClane, sobs over Stewart's break-up from Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson in the clip, which aired during Willis' appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday.

The hardman breaks down in tears as he tries to deliver his catchphrase, "Yippee-ki-yay, motherf---ker!" in the mock trailer for fake sequel Twi-Hard: With A Vengeance.

He wails, "I'm a little distracted lately, I lost some friends... Kristen and Rob, Bella and Edward - they broke up! They were supposed to be together forever, goddamnit!"

Introducing the sketch, Willis joked to host Letterman, "It's a pretty emotional scene, but very tough. There's a lot of action going on."

Stewart shocked fans in July when she confessed to an "indiscretion" with filmmaker Rupert Sanders and publicly apologized to Pattinson.

English GCSE 'properly graded' - Belfast Telegraph

Friday, 31 August 2012

Headteachers have warned they could still mount a legal challenge over GCSE English, as Ofqual said that this summer's results will not be re-graded.

The regulator's initial report found that January's GCSE English exams were "graded generously" but the June boundaries were properly set and candidates' work properly graded. Students who gained their English GCSE this summer will be given an extra chance to re-sit in November, Ofqual said.

But it added that it would not be "revisiting" the June grade boundaries because it would "contradict our responsibility to maintain standards over time and make sure results are comparable year-on-year." The June boundaries were right, Ofqual added.

The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) said it was not "acceptable or practicable" to make the students resit examinations. It warned it could still begin a legal challenge against grade boundary changes on the grounds that it had disadvantaged certain groups of students.

Headteachers had called for Ofqual to begin an investigation into this summer's GCSE English results after it emerged that grade boundaries had been moved during the year. As national GCSE results were published last week, angry headteachers claimed that exam boards had raised grade boundaries in English amid fears that too many children were going to get a C.

Shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg said that Ofqual's report was not good enough, and called on Education Secretary Michael Gove to make a statement to Parliament on Monday about how the government intends to address concerns about GCSE English.

ASCL general secretary Brian Lightman said: "We are actively considering what legal challenge would be a way of dealing with this, although we would much prefer to solve this through other means. What we are seeking to do here is get justice for young people who have been badly affected by systemic failures that are not of their making."

Ofqual chief regulator Glenys Stacey said the regulator looked carefully at how GCSE English qualifications had been awarded this year: "The issue is not the June but the January boundaries. Again, examiners used their best judgment in setting these boundaries, but they had less data and information to work with."

Ms Stacey said: "We have spoken to exam boards and they have been very responsive. Recognising the strength of feeling, they will be offering early resits for students who sat the June units. We will now go through our analysis and evidence with the representative groups for schools and colleges, so they can see it for themselves. We will also talk with schools, exam boards and assessment experts to see what lessons can be learnt and what can be done better in the future."

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) said it was "extremely disappointed" in the findings of Ofqual's interim report. "The gravity of this situation cannot be overestimated," NAHT general secretary Russell Hobby said. "Our call for results to be re-graded remains. We will press for the report outcomes to be reconsidered and a re-grading to be carried out with the utmost urgency, to bring to an end the uncertainty over so many students' futures."

Major quake off Philippines causes panic but minor damage - Reuters UK

MANILA | Fri Aug 31, 2012 5:58pm BST

MANILA (Reuters) - An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck off the Philippines on Friday killing one person, damaging roads and bridges and sending people fleeing to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, a politician and authorities said.

The quake was centred off the east coast, 91 miles (146 km) off the town of Guiuan in Samar province at a depth of about 20 miles (32 km), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for much of the region, but cancelled it about two hours later.

Philippine authorities maintained their tsunami warning for longer, after ordering residents to get out of coastal areas immediately. They cancelled it more than three hours after the quake.

"Residents can now return to their homes. It's safe now, the danger of a tsunami has passed," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology said.

The mayor of Guiuan, Annalisa Quan, told local radio there was no report of major damage.

The head of the national disaster agency, Benito Ramos, said one woman was killed in Cagayan de Oro town on the island of Mindanao when heavy rain and the quake triggered a landslide that buried her house. A child was injured.

Samar congressman Ben Evardone told local radio some bridges and roads were damaged and people had fled from coastal areas in panic, seeking refuge inland.

"We're used to quakes here so residents immediately went to higher ground," Pinky Almaite, a resident of Sulat, a seaside town in Eastern Samar, told Reuters.

"Many were running as they took with them whatever their hands could carry - flashlights, food, clothes, some even took their cows."

Large parts of Samar and Leyte province had no power or internet connections.

"The only lights you see are from vehicles in the streets headed to higher ground," said a radio reporter in the town of Borongan.

The tsunami warning was initially issued for the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and other islands in the Pacific including the U.S. state of Hawaii.

Small waves of about 16 cm (6 inches) had hit a southern Philippine island, the seismology agency said, and warned that bigger ones could follow and residents were ordered to get to ground 10 metres (30 feet) above sea level.

The region has been hit by two huge quakes in the past decade. At least 230,000 people in 13 Indian Ocean countries were killed in a quake and tsunami off Indonesia in 2004.

Last year, an earthquake and tsunami off Japan's northeastern coast killed about 20,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years after waves battered a nuclear power station.

10 Things We Learned During Billionaires' Battle - ABC News

The $5.6 billion legal clash between Russian oligarchs Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich offered a rare window into the lives of the fabulously wealthy. With judge Elizabeth Gloster ruling Friday in Abramovich's favor, let's look back at 10 things we learned during the testimony:

———

1. OLIGARCHS DON'T PUT ANYTHING IN WRITING.

Gloster pointed out that almost all aspects of the alleged agreements between Berezovsky and Abramovich were in dispute, largely because many of the alleged deals were made verbally. No one even took notes.

Abramovich said the cloud this created was partly intentional: He claimed he went along with the fiction that Berezovsky owned part of Abramovich's company, Sibneft, because Berezovsky's political capital helped protect the business.

———

1. AN OFFICE IS NO PLACE TO MEET.

Even when they were doing business, the two men rarely met in conventional places of business. Their meetings took place at all sorts of exotic and exclusive sites: Berezovsky's club in Moscow; on the Riviera; in the French Alps; at the Dorchester Hotel in London; in private planes and super-yachts; and at various heliports and airports.

———

1. OLIGARCHS DON'T NEED TO DRESS UP.

In one of the trial's most colorful scenes, Abramovich said Berezovsky arrived at a high-stakes meeting in 2000 at London's Dorchester Hotel wearing a dressing gown and looking disheveled. Berezovsky, who did not confirm his wardrobe choice, claimed that the description was an attempt to smear him and paint him as a Godfather-like mafia figure.

———

1. A MILLION DOLLARS IS NOTHING.

Abramovich said Berezovsky was down to his last $1 million when he fled from Russia in 2000.

"He would not have lived long on that," Abramovich testified.

———

1. WITNESSES ARE MORE EFFECTIVE WHEN THEY HAVE AN INCENTIVE.

Berezovsky admitted in court that he had promised two potential witnesses 1 percent shares of his judgment — potentially tens of millions of dollars — if he won his case.

———

1. AN OLIGARCH IS MOST VULNERABLE WHEN SHOPPING.

It wasn't easy for Berezovsky to serve notice that he intended to sue Abramovich. He told The Associated Press that he carried the legal papers in his car for six months while he tried to track Abramovich down, once making a trip 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of London.

"I even flew to Manchester to game between Manchester United and Chelsea, but he was with 20 bodyguards. It was impossible to give him papers," Berezovsky said at the time.

Berezovsky finally got his chance on London's swank Sloane Square, when he spotted Abramovich shopping in a Hermes boutique. Berezovsky walked in, to the horror of Abramovich's security detail, and served him.

———

1. EVERY HOUSE NEEDS A ROOF.

The Russian word most bandied about during the trial was "krysha," which means roof. It also means political patronage that blurred the line between business, politics and shady mafia dealings.

Abramovich testified that in the 1990s, it was impossible for anyone to build up a major business without the help of someone with business and political connections. That someone was Berezovsky, who he claimed demanded millions of dollars in return for protection.

Striking miners react as they are addressed by former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) President Julius Malema outside a South African mine in Rustenburg, 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Johannesburg August 18, 2012. The bloody protest by South African miners that ended in a hail of police gunfire and 34 deaths this week could also wound the ruling ANC and its main labour ally, laying bare workers' anger over enduring inequalities in Africa's biggest economy. Thursday's shooting, bringing back memories of apartheid-era violence, underlined that after 18 years in power the African National Congress and its union partner have not been able to heal the fissures of income disparity, poverty and joblessness scarring the country. REUTERS/Siphiwe Sibeko (SOUTH AFRICA - Tags: CIVIL UNREST POLITICS TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY)

Suspects, apparently ... those miners who went on strike and were arrested are now being trialled for murder according to a doctrine that has not been employed since the days of apartheid. Photo: Reuters

TWO weeks after the police opened fire on a crowd of 3000 striking workers at a platinum mine near Johannesburg, killing 34 people, prosecutors are bringing murder charges against a surprising set of suspects: the miners themselves.

Using an obscure legal doctrine frequently relied upon by the apartheid government in its dying days, prosecutors did not accuse the police officers who shot and killed the strikers as they surged forward, machetes in hand. Instead, officials said on Thursday they were pursuing murder charges against the 270 miners who were arrested after the shooting stopped.

It was the latest turn in a story that has unleashed rage in South Africa over inequality, poverty and unemployment. The decision to charge the miners threatened to intensify that rift.

A spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority, Frank Lesenyego, cited ''34 counts of murder that have been laid against the 270 accused''. He said they were being charged under the ''common-purpose'' law, in which members of a crowd - at the time when a crime is committed - can be prosecuted as accomplices.

''The charge is spurious,'' said Pierre de Vos, a legal scholar at the University of Cape Town. ''It will not fly. No court in South Africa on any set of facts will find the miners guilty through the common-purpose doctrine.''

A spokesman for the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Patrick Craven, said: The lawyers must really be very stupid if they think these charges will stick.''

16.51: Colin Young is reporting that Jermaine Jenas is likely to opt for a move to Fulham after turning down Sunderland.

16.49: Dnipro midfielder Derek Boateng has revealed that his potential move to Fulham has hit a snag. The Ghanaian has tweeted: 'Have problems with move to @FulhamFC Deal in doubt now'.

16.45: It seems we've hit that stage in the day between fees being agreed for players and medicals and paperwork being completed. Among those we are waiting on are: Stephane Mbia (Marseille to QPR), Javi Garcia (Benfica to Man City), Matija Nastasic (Fiorentina to Man City), Hugo Lloris (Lyon to Spurs) and Joao Moutinho (Porto to Spurs).

16.41: Riath Al-Samarrai reports that Swansea are suffering a bit in the market this afternoon. A deal for Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha doesn't appear to be going anywhere and sources at Swansea fear Aston Villa will beat them to the signing of Crewe captain Ashley Westwood.

16.36: John Edwards reports that Nir Biton's hopes of landing a dream move to Tottenham have been dashed by red tape. The 20-year old Israel midfielder flew to London with FC Ashdod owner Jacky Ben-Zaken but was unable to secure a work permit ahead of the transfer deadline.

16.35: Spurs fans have been having a laugh at the expense of Maicon on the news of his arrival at Man City (see picture below). Maicon was, of course, famously roasted by Gareth Bale in two Champions League ties two seasons ago.

16.21: Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Liverpool's interest in taking Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun back to Anfield on loan. You can understand why some deals are left late, but others - like that one - baffle me. Why not get it done earlier in the summer? Still, it makes for good fun for us!

16.19: BREAKING NEWS: Man City have agreed a 24m deal with Benfica for midfielder Javi Garcia. The Spaniard's deal will go through tonight subject to a medical.

16.18: Colin Young reports that Middlesbrough hope to have seen off interest in striker Marvin Emnes from Swansea City. Boss Tony Mowbray has said: 'I am not anticipating any late calls unless that is a tactic from certain clubs. I don't think it's a wise tactic because I would suggest we won't be selling as he is a player we would need to replace and it is getting late in the day.'

16.13: Brendan Rodgers has just been quizzed by the press on several players who have been rumored to be joining Liverpool. He gave a flat 'no' to suggestions of Theo Walcott and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar signing, but was happy to discuss the talents of Daniel Sturridge. Hmm...

16.02: Well, what a day it's been so far. I can't remember a deadline day being this frantic. The combination of the Euros pushing deals back and the Olympics pushing the start of the season back has led to a busier than ever deadline day.

Done deal: Maicon is unveiled as a Man City player

15.58: Right, that's it from me. My estimable colleague Joe Ridge picks up the baton from here to take us through to 11pm. Bye.

15.54: Stoke have made an inquiry about Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to listen to 8million offers for the England international, who has already turned down a move to Fulham.

15.49: Former boyband member Anthony Costa (of Blue fame, remember?) is at Spurs Lodge, hanging around with the fans at the gates of the training complex. Cringe.

15.48: Hugo Lloris is at Spurs lodge, I repeat...

15.46: Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo has confirmed Joey Barton's arrival depended on Stephane Mbia joining QPR.

Barton has passed a medical and took part in a light training session this morning.

15.39: More news for you QPR fans: Stephane Mbia has touched down in London and is now traveling to a secret location in Surrey to complete his medical. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he's heading to Tesco in Camberley. I could be wrong.

15.30: DONE DEAL: Richard Wright has joined Manchester City.

15.23: DONE DEAL: Dimitar Berbatov is a Fulham player. The Bulgarian joins the Cottagers on a 5million deal, four years after signing for Manchester United for 30.75m.

On the move, Berbatov said: 'I'm delighted to have signed for Fulham and I look forward to playing under Martin Jol once again.

'As soon as I was aware of Fulham's interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I'm impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the Club and I can't wait to get started.'

15.16: Here's some very big (potential) news: Chelsea's hopes of signing Bayer Leverkusen forward Andre Schurrle before the transfer window closes are fading and so they are planning to turn their attention to former Tottenham target, Marseille striker Loic Remy.

15.12: Gary Neville's two pennies (via Twitter, bien sur): 'What the transfer deadline gives you is a clear indication of which are the badly run football clubs!!!'

Over to you, Tottenham.

15.08: Mail on Sunday's Joe Bernstein writes: 'England's one-cap wonder Jay Bothroyd is expected to join Sheffield Wednesday on loan today after being told he is surplus to requirements at QPR.

'Bothroyd, 30, had several Championship clubs chasing him including Brighton but Wednesday manager Dave Jones is favourite to sign him before tonight's 11pm deadline with QPR paying a portion of the striker's 40,000-a-week wages.'

15.04: Big news for Manchester City fans and this could be the biggest deal of the day: Manchester City and Benfica have come to agreement over Javi Garcia - in the region of 24million.

TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY: 8 HOURS TO GO

14.56: Roque Santa Cruz (remember him?) is undergoing a medical at Malaga.

14.53: Newcastle defender Paul Dummett has travelled to Scotland for talks over a loan move with St Mirren boss Danny Lennon. The Wales Under 21 defender, who can play at left-back or centre-half, could be included in the Saints squad to face Aberdeen tomorrow.

14.47: Hull City winger Jordan Stewart has joined Championship rivals Burnley. The 21-year-old former Manchester United junior, who has played 50 games for the Tigers, has been allowed to leave by new boss Steve Bruce for an undisclosed fee. The initial deal at Turf Moor is for a loan until January.

14.43: There's mixed news from Swansea. The proposed deals for Feyenoord's Cabral and Westwood of Crewe have fallen through, though there is still some hope at the Liberty Stadium that the latter can be resurrected.

Valencia winger Hernandez, meanwhile, is having his medical and international clearance has been granted for Itay Shechter to join on loan from Kaiserslautern.

14.36: Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has launched an attack on Tottenham chairman Daniel levy over the transfer of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to north London.

Aulas said: 'The negotiation with the Tottenham directors has been the hardest I have ever had to undergo in these 25 years.

'We had email exchanges which have been contradicted, so that's made it very complicated. It's difficult. The Tottenham board's theory is to explain that the economic market is very hard and so we have to get used to renegotiating.'

Brinkmanship is the name of the game in that deal.

14.32: Chelsea may have their work cut out prising Andre Schurrle away from Bayer Levekusen, after sporting director Rudi Voller reiterated, as recently as Thursday night, their determination to hang on to him. Voller insisted Chelsea would be wasting their time launching another bid and that Leverkusen's Germany forward would be staying put.

14.29: Alan Pardew has ruled out any last minute deals. The Newcastle manager, who held talks with chairman Mike Ashley after securing his side's place in the Europa Cup group phase, is satisfied his squad can handle a sustained European campaign.

14.18: Celtic are celebrating sealing their place in the Champions' League group stage by closing in on Belgium striker Marvin Ogunjimi.

14.15: Aston Villa are set to make a renewed bid for striker Christian Benteke, after his club Genk stepped up their quest for a suitable candidate to replace him.

Genk are believed to be closing in on Mons marksman Jeremy Perbet, last season's Belgian League top scorer and a target for Everton and Leicester earlier this year.

Should they land him, they would listen to an improved Villa bid for 21-year old Belgium striker Benteke, after turning down an initial 6million offer that was exclusively revealed in Sportsmail earlier this week. Villa are desperate for more firepower and made an unsuccessful pre-deadline approach for Fulham's Clint Dempsey.

14.10: Rafael van der Vaart has agreed terms with Hamburg and the two clubs have agreed a fee. All done now, bar the shouting. All the details on that move can be found here.

14.06: Swansea are in discussions for Crystal Palace wideman Wilfred Zaha. But the 6m asking price hasn't gone down well. Could be one that drags on for the rest of the day.

'Our defence looked a little suspect against Liverpool, but Kolo Toure didn't really help that... I wouldn't mind seeing his name on the transfer list. Why do we have so many left backs, but not right backs?'

13.07: Danny Rose is Martin O'Neill's fifth summer signing following the arrivals of Carlos Cueller, Louis Saha, Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson. O'Neill is now hoping to secure a permanent deal for Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas.

12.38: Steven Nzonzi's agent spotted entering Stoke's training ground. How many midfielders do they want? Nzonzi is desperate for a new club after a series of fall-outs with Steve Kean at Blackburn last season.

Few things we're waiting on: Everton to confirm Bryan Ovideo deal, Sunderland are very close to taking Danny Rose on loan and Jermaine Jenas on a permanent deal and Rafael van der Vaart is heading to Germany for a medical ahead of returning to Hamburg. Spurs will end the day with fewer players than Portsmouth at this rate.

Plus the Clint Dempsey saga is sure to take a number of twists before his fate is decided later today.

City slickers: Maicon and Nastasic are two players Mancini is hoping to sign

10.43: Chris writes: 'I think Michael Owen has, by and large, conducted himself well throughout his career but today's twitter activity does have an air of desperation around it.

'Even so still think he has a lot to offer. Actually think he could do a job at Liverpool!!'
