Nintendo Confirms Wii Successor Coming in 2012 - PC Magazine

The speculation that Nintendo will announce a new game console at the trade show E3 in June isn't speculation anymore. Nintendo has released its sales numbers for the last fiscal year today, and with it the confirmation that it will be showing off a new system in Los Angeles.

The announcement was short and cryptic, only stating "we will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo," not confirming any of the recent rumors surrounding the specs of the system. We'll have to wait until June to find out if the "Wii 2" will have the technical specs to compete with or even overshadow the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Speculation surrounding the new console has been scattershot at best. Some say it will be named the Stream. Some say it will have a triple-core PowerPC CPU. Some say it will natively output 1080p video. Some say its controllers will have their own screens, and will be able to emulate consoles. For all we know, it could be called the Stig (though I may be thinking of Top Gear in that case).

Nintendo also released its sales numbers, which were bittersweet. The 3DS has sold 3.6 million units worldwide since its release in February in Japan. However, overall hardware and software sales dropped as the Wii and DS have dwindled in popularity, causing a 66 percent drop in net profits over last year. The announcement of a new home console probably won't help bolster sales, but between the 3DS and new hardware next year, Nintendo is setting itself up for a strong 2012.
