About 70 million video gamers worldwide who use the Sony PlayStation network are now into their fifth day without service.

Sony's Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media, Patrick Seybold, said in his blog that Sony took the action to shut down the operation.

In the most recent update he stated: "We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity (Sony's media streaming service) have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online.

"Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure."

That was on Saturday. The network went down on Wednesday.

In an earlier post, Seybold said there had been an "external intrusion" so that would indicate hacking. One post said the network outage may have been the result of "targeted behavior by an outside party."

Those words have since been deleted. Sony has been targeted before by a hacker group called 'Anonymous' but the group says this was not their work.

There are some online reports that speculate the system could be back up in the next 24 hours or so, but Sony has put no timeline on possible resumption of service.
