ARMED police were last night guarding a gypsy site after two men were shot dead in a feud between travelling families.

The double killing followed a string of incidents, including arson attacks and a suspected murder attempt, on the site in recent weeks.

Police found one man in a burning car and another lying dead at the entrance to the Willow Park site near Mildenhall, Suffolk.

Villagers reported hearing up to nine gunshots. One local said there had been "a simmering feud" between travellers at the site and other gypsies.

The killings on Tuesday night come four weeks after five men were arrested at the site after shots were fired at a vehicle and mobile home.

Suffolk police's Chief Supt Stewart Gullsaid: "We believe the deaths are connected to an ongoing dispute."

A man of 40 was last night arrested on suspicion of murder.
