The move, would would have brought the country into line with the rest of Europe, has not been included in a new tourism strategy, despite expectations that it would be.

Tourism Minister John Penrose said the Government's position is that the proposal to introduce longer daylight hours is an interesting idea, but that any change would need the consent of the whole of the United Kingdom.

Opposition to the proposal is strongest in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

However the May Day bank holiday could be replaced by a new national holiday as part of the new plan which will be announced today.

The Government says it's considering making St George's Day a bank holiday in England, and the same with St David's Day in Wales.

Another option is a Trafalgar Day in October. The idea is to elongate the tourist season.

Mr Penrose, who holidayed in Cornwall last summer and intends to do so again this year, said he wants to encourage more people to spend their holidays in Britain.

"As a nation we are a little bit prone to underplay what we have on our doorstep," he said.

The tourism strategy, which aims to generate an extra four million overseas visitors to the UK over the next four years, has been welcomed by VisitBritain.

But the Federation of Small Businesses says the Government is merely "tinkering" when what the tourist industry really needs is more investment.

The Federation says the dissolution of Regional Development Agencies means there is less money available for boosting tourism.
