X Factor bosses and contestants have made a secret pact not to criticise Chris Maloney in interviews as they fear it will get him sympathy votes.
Simon Cowell and executive producers fear attacks on Scouser Chris are helping him to stay on the show and give him a chance of winning.
After getting the boot, Essex boy Rylan Clarke, 23, was pushed to talk about his feud with Chris but would only say: "Chris has got a massive fan base.
"It is a public vote show.
"If they are doing it for the right reasons great, if it is the wrong reasons they have only got themselves to blame."
He added: "I am friends with everyone on that show."
But an insider said: "Rylan would love to blast Chris but knows it would backfire.
"He was advised to avoid any direct attacks on Chris if he wants someone else to win.
"It is a new tactic by X Factor to stop anyone feeling sorry for him.
"There is a definite pact between the contestants not to give Chris extra publicity."
An X Factor spokesman said: "None of the contestants are told what to say about one another."
