Dr Penney began his PhD into amber studies in 1994, and says he has "no doubt that his studies were funded on the back of Jurassic Park".

As for the films, Dr Penney says they are highly entertaining, but have "lots of problems and inconsistences scientifically."

For example, the amber from which DNA is extracted in the film was supposedly from the Dominican Republic, bur Dr Penney says that that region is "not old enough for dinosaurs to have existed".

He also points out that the DNA extraction in Jurassic Park was rather less labour intensive than the "massive extraction process" necessary within a scientific lab.

Dr Penney admits, however, that the film has glamourised his profession. Asked whether dinosaurs would walk the earth again, he said: "Never say never. Technology and science has progressed so much that it may happen one day."

Even if science did bring back the Brontosauruses, however, they may not last long: "Bringing them back is one thing", says Penney, "keeping them alive is quite another."
