(CNN) -- Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has admitted injury-plagued midfielder Owen Hargreaves may have played his last game for the club.
Hargreaves joined United from Bayern Munich for $28 million in 2007, but the England international has seen his Old Trafford career hampered by a series of injuries.
The 30-year-old has made only one brief appearance for the Red Devils this season, in their November defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Ferguson said Hargreaves will not play again this campaign.
Hargreaves' contract is due to expire at the end of the current season and Ferguson is unsure as to whether he will be offered a new deal.
"I don't see Hargreaves playing this season," the 69-year-old told the Premier League leader's official web site.
"He's got this shoulder injury which I think has put his season to an end. He's carried bad luck all the time he's been here. David Gill (United's chief executive) had a discussion with the boy last week. His contract is up at the end of the season -- we have to make a decision."
Since making his international debut in 2001, Hargreaves has played 42 times for his country and was part of the England squad for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and Euro 2004.
The Canada-born utility player has won four German Bundesliga titles, one English Premier League title and two European Champions League winners' medals since his career began in 2000.
Hargreaves will play no part in United's FA Cup semifinal against cross-city rivals Manchester City on Saturday and will be joined on the sidelines by striker Wayne Rooney.
The 25-year-old is serving the second match of a two-game domestic ban for swearing at a television camera during a recent 4-2 victory over West Ham.
City also have injury concerns, with captain and leading goalscorer Carlos Tevez ruled out of the last-four clash with a hamstring injury.
