Researchers peer into Playbook - Ottawa Citizen

Hours after the Playbook's official release, electronics research firm UBM Techinsights had it torn apart to inspect the technological wizardry inside.

According to the Ottawa-based research company, each 32-gigabyte versions of the tablet costs Research In Motion Ltd. about $205 in parts.

In comparison, the components in the 32-gigabyte version of Apple Inc.'s iPad 2 are worth around $253.

For the true tech gearheads, here is what UBM Techinsights says is under PlayBook's hood:

— SanDisk-Toshiba SDIN5C2-16G - MLC NAND Flash Memory, 32 GB.

— Texas Instruments OMAP4430 applications processor located in package-on-package on board.

— Elpida B8064B2BPB 1 GB LPDDR2 DRAM system memory located on the OMAP4430.

— Texas Instruments TWL6040 power management integrated circuit.

— Intersil i951 9HRTZ F032RG integrated circuit.

— Wolfson Micro WM8994E audio codec.

— ST Microelectronics XTV0987 5 MP mobile image processor (also found in Blackberry Torch).

— Texas Instruments WL1283C — WiLink 7.0 single-chip WLAN, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 and FM.

— Invensense MPU-3050 Triple Axis (X/Y/Z) MEMS gyroscope (motion processing unit), SIX AXIS sensor.
