A nine-year-old girl is being treated in hospital in Southampton after being bitten by an adder in the New Forest.

Tyler Butcher had been walking with her family on Friday and was heading back to the car when the reptile bit her on the foot.

Her father Kenny Butcher told Sky News his daughter let out a little "yelp" as it happened and he could see the creature slithering away.

He said Tyler was in agony and they knew they had to ring 999.

The young girl was in intensive care on Friday night and her leg turned black and became badly bruised.

She has now been given anti-venom treatment and is recovering well.

Adder bites are very rare in the UK and Mr Butcher said there had been a lot of interest in the bite from doctors at the hospital.
