PlayStation Network to return - The Sun

SONY will begin restoring its hacked PlayStation Network service this week, the company said today.

It follows a major security breach in which the personal information and possibly credit card details of 77million users was stolen.

The Japanese technology giant also announced new security steps to prevent similar attacks in future.

Executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai said: "This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry.

"These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber security.

"We take the security of our consumers' information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data."

The PlayStation Network, an online service used by owners of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable (PSP) consoles, has been offline since April 20.

A "Welcome Back" scheme offering free content to all subscribers, and a free 30-day subscription to PlayStation Plus, will form part of the restoration process.

Sony said it had worked with security firms and "implemented significant security measures to further detect unauthorised activity and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information".

It has also created a new security officer position to oversee the new measures.

It said it would add automated monitoring to help defend against new attacks, offer enhanced levels of data protection and encryption and additional firewalls.

Britain, the United States, Australia and Hong Kong are investigating the hacking and theft of personal data.

A US House of Representatives panel sent a letter to Hirai with questions on the data breach on Friday.
